This past weekend was the Open Studios weekend here in Salinas … and it was good fun meeting folks, meeting fans, and chumming it up with pals who stopped by. Thank you to all who made it up to The Cartoonery Friday night thru Sunday.

I painted up some mini watercolors special for the event, and have a few left on the board (“Grace”, in the last post, has already found a good home). I will post a few of them and if yer interested in acquiring them for yer own self, email me (first come first serve). We’ll discuss payment options, etc. once I hear from ya.

So without further adieu…

Twinkie Napping is 4 X 5.5 inches. $15.

Artober & final thoughts on APE…

It’s ARToberFest in Salinas… Are you ready for some… ART FUN? If you are in Salinas this weekend, drop by the Cartoonery. It’ll be receiving guests all weekend… that’s right, open studio time. I moved some stuff around, painted up some ridiculously (low) priced watercolor minis and forced Judy to slave at the oven for some tasty baked treats…. (lies… she volunteered).

Here’s one of the little watercolors I done up. This is about 3″ square… and is priced at $10. Didn’t I tell you they were ridiculously priced? So make sure ya come early before the little boogers are gone! The whole gang’s here in watercolor… even Gus, the octopus!

So APE… It’s been fun sharing my trip to APE on the blog here… There is so much more to tell… but it will just have to suffice that I post the photos up to Squid Row Mama’s Flickr site… and you can check them there shortly (and soon). If you’ve pondered APE, attending, presenting at, or volunteering for… It’s well worth it… The Last Gasp opening party alone is worth the experience… (I think I have some pics of last year’s party on the Flickr…. I heard that this year, they remodeled their front offices… can’t wait until next year to see!)

Here’s Harold in the truck… we’re approaching The City and Harold’s getting a bit jumpy… he’s excitable.

comics, comics, comics

I love me some comics! I tend to gravitate more to autobio stuff… or life-inspired stories… which is why Craig Thompson and EmiTown are faves. Keith Knight also fits into this category. Keith has a few different comic strips (The K Chronicles, The Knight Life, & thINK). He had a complilation there on his APE table that I just could NOT pass up…. once I saw the strip about the puking cat and the toilet, I slapped my twenty on the table.

Aidan Casserly offered up his new comic Scapula: Sinister Monster Doom Legion (It truly is sinister and dark). If you like sock puppets and juvenile poop humor (I mean that in a nice way), this one’s for you! Besides, the mad-cap humor, the loverly drawings and eerie  coloring’s really nice. Aidan “Graced” the front page of my copy  with a drawerin’…. hee hee. (Aidan kinda digs Grace… like I dig Hypnausia… it’s just weirdo-ness).

Side b: the music lover’s comic anthology was another purchase. This powerhouse comic includes pages by Lucy Knisley (French Milk), Jeffrey Brown, Jim Mahfood, Warren Wucinich (Flight), Todd Webb, Lars Brown and soooo many others… So if you like music and variety… you’ll dig this one!

Hababi… Beloved… Craig Thompson

One of the highlights of this past weekend was meeting Craig Thompson, buying his 7-years-in-the-making book, Habibi... and him signing it. Harold was overjoyed when Mr. Thompson agreed to have his photo taken with him! (Harold’s pink button says: “Use your library voices, Darn it!” He opted for the PC version and not the other one).

I haven’t  had the chance to begin reading this amazing book with ARToberFest coming up and a mini-trip on the horizon.  But the nice thing about books is… they’ll wait for you.

Oh… and “habibi” means beloved. I like that.

Shoe, Scapula, and APE

It sounds like a joke, don’t it… or something you’d throw into a cauldron (it is getting to be Halloweenie time). Soooo… Flitting around APE this year was pretty groovy as I was able to visit some of my toonie pals and make some new ones.

Aidan (the NOT-clown here) does the Madcap comic, Scapula… which drops every Sunday. It’s silly, as is Aidan, and I only wish I coulda hung out with Mr. Scap some more. (sigh, next time, Aidan)…

Also on the route of pals to drop in on was the nice Lovesick Robot folks (they’re from Milwaukee), Crow at Nicky510, and Shoe… (Or Alex Schumacher) who was giving a workshop with Mark Peaslee on the writer-artist relationship/colaboration process.

I picked up a number of comics, as you would guess, whilst at APE… I will highlight them in a later post… but one of these comics was Side B. (There is a Side A, but I opted for B… it was bigger and Jim Mahfood is in B… and I likes Mahfood)… anyhoo… this is Mike… and he’s in Side B… He’s side a of a two part team… side b is his wife who did the art (but she warn’t around)… Mike and Harold seemed to get along right off the bat. Here’s Mike giving Harold funny bunny ears (kinda ironic).
