In this issue… Salinas artist, Anamarie Morales, shares her macabre perspective.

“Evil Plans” on the board…

Yes, I am up to no good. I have “evil plans” and I am willing to enact them.

Okay, maybe they aren’t EVIL plans… but they are plans.

I bought a book recently, called Evil Plans: Having Fun on the Road to World Domination by Hugh MacLeod (a cartoonist). It is making me happy. It is full of little cartoonificated sound bites to success… so it’s not just “about words.” It is a helpful tool in where I am at right now… on the road to world domination.

Sooo… my mind is filled with  a lot of stuff right now. Don’t ask me any hard questions

because you will only get the spinning ball of death. I’m processing… I’m running 4 programs at once… and I am not exactly an Apple computer… I usually do only one thing at a time well. BUT, I’m pretty sure that if you are going to take over the world, you need to multi-task, if even just a little. So, Step ONE… think it out in your sketchbook…. make it visual. Then pin it up on your work board and LOOK at it EVERYDAY. I am a visual person. If something is existing in nowhere land, it will stay there.

Then it’s time to put things into action. Set goals and make your move. These goals might remain kinda wonky and loose… because you can change them. Flexibility is tres important because success isn’t a straight line.

This is where I am right now. My goal is to get the Best of  Squid book out before Big Wow in San Jose in May.

Salinas Valley Comic Con… and other events…

IMG_3453For 2014, Squid Row has signed on for some new venues and some old favorites as well…

Do you know where to find info on coming events? It’s just about the comic… that black tab that says “Events.”

Here’s what’s coming up very soon…

The first ever Salinas Valley Comic Con is scheduled to coincide with the First Friday Art Walk in February. That’s the 7th. It’s at the world renowned Steinbeck Center from 3pm to 9pm. Local cartoonists, including me, will have tables, and there will be some panels as well. More info to come on this one!

There’s Big Wow in May… and since Stumptown Comics Fest isn’t really around anymore, there’s  … well, heck… have a look at the Events tab and see what’s on tap so far!

Happy New Yearing in Progress

Squiddies All!

colorAlready the new year has started off on a different road… a new path… a change of scenery. Sometimes change happens without you knowing it. Imagine my surprise to read in Sunday’s local paper that they will no longer be running my comic strip. Wow.

Do you remember in the 80’s version of Clash of the Titans where Zeus picks up Perseus from his happy home, and deposits him in an arena… that’s the way I felt that morning. Boom! What is going on? Where am I?

Well, just like Perseus, I didn’t sit around scratching my head for too long. I jumped into action. 2014, sans my local paper, is going to be AWESOME!

Here’s an advance look into this stunning new year…

  • A new book is in the works. It is a compilation from 2012-2013. The sorting has begun. If you have a favorite storyline, email that to me. I wanna know what fans wanna see in print.
  • There will be a bit of a change in focus to the comic strip here. By no means will Squid Row be going away! No! But there will be some interesting changes. This road is still very unfamiliar to me… and I am not certain where things will go… but Squid is a part of me… and amputating an appendage like this comic strip would be damaging to my health.
  • Graphic Novel idea! … I have loved graphic novels and want to dive in. You can expect to see some teasers along the way.

Don’t expect the changes to be felt in the comic strip right away. I am two months out on toons. This gives me some time to, explore, tweak, and remodel.

It’s an exciting time. I believe everything happens for a reason. I expect that God has got some exciting plans already put into motion. My roadway isn’t clear; I can hardly see a path through all the foil-age, but challenge is exciting and there’s gatta be a machete around her somewheres.

Thanks for your ongoing support!
