… and never be again! It was told to those of us APE-ing that The Alternative Press Expo would no longer be run by the Comic Con people… and also will not return to San Francisco, but instead, move back to San Jose. Last year, the big news was that APE would no longer be a The Concourse (this year, it was at the lovely but busy Ft. Mason)… Now this! Well, things are certainly interesting. Anyhoo… here’s some scenes from our table!
Well, look who’s at the door!
The Alternative Press Expo is October 4th & 5th… I am posting the map of the brand new venue… Fort Mason. It’s in San Fran Central. There is one slight change… the workshop I will be giving with Betsy Streeter, has been moved to 1pm. Be advised. But also… come and get your TOAST!
APE is upon us!
Yes, it is time for Squid Row to go to APE… firstest weekend in October. This year the event will be held, not at the Concourse, but at the Fort Mason Center… in the very heart of San Francisco!
This AND I will be rawking table 705 with Awesome-Rawker Jack of the Portland-based comic strip, Gulls. AND to make things all more better, friend of the show and great storytelling/amazing person, Betsy Streeter will be RIGHT next door at table 706! OH, this will be fun! Fun Betsy will bring Fun Jen… and hilarity will ensue. And there will be toast!
OH… and if you bring your Flat Randie with you to A.P.E., I’ll give you a button! Flash Randie and magically a button with appear! (Some photo documentation required). Don’t have a Flat Randie? You can download one from the last blog post! Some photo documentan required.
As a bit of silliness, which I am likely to fall into with little or no provocation… Here is a photo of me and Baxter from Gulls… leave your caption in the comments… why? for giggles, of course!
Hello, Squiddies! It’s been a wild weekend!
It started off by flying into Portland, checking into the Crowne Plaza and then climbing “Big Pink” for lunch. Delish-ishness with a view. Then came a visit to the new and improved Powell’s Books, a little looking around Doc Marten’s, some Blue (not pink boxed) donuts… and culminating with an attempt to party at the Rose City Kick-off Party but instead enjoying a lower key dinner with Jack of Gulls (at the Broadway Grille) WHERE…. it happened! … I got the news that you amazing people got Squid Row to full TGT Media Squid Row Glory! I must thank each and every one of you for taking time out of your day to vote for Squid Row! (More on that in a minute).
So then there was the Rose City Comic Con… it was … interesting. I have never seen so many costumed individuals lurking through a convention’s aisles in my life! It was near madness! In any case, there was a noticeable difference between this convention and what WAS Stumptown COMICS FEST… a festival that was about smaller press comics, and graphic novelizers …. it lead me to a great deal of thinking and conversation at my table about the different communities under the comics umbrella.
I will not attend this event next year, but will be looking for another in the Portland area. As a contrast, however… I did do very well at Big Wow! in San Jose. There seemed to be more of a balance of indie stuff to Pop-culture/ big industry superhero stuff… BUT I was an exhibitor, not an Artist Alley-er like at Rose City… I’m still trying to figure out the dynamics of what happened this weekend and what is to come… as I am already signed up for Big Wow! next year.
A special thank you to Jack of the comic strip, Gulls… We shared the table… and will again do so in two weeks at A.P.E. in San Fran…
NOW… THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU… for the TGT Media Win!!!! As I promised I will be setting up a special download for you, as a thank you for your dedication to Squid Row’s Win! Toon in this week for that special download!
Well, I’m off to Portland! … for Rose City Comic Con. I am sharing a table with my pal, Jack Kent who does the comic strip, Gulls. It is sure to be a rawk-ing good time!
This will our first time at this particular convention. The prior Portland con was Stumptown, which no longer exists. It makes me sad as I really enjoyed the energy there. BUT, I am certain that RCCC will be just as much fun. I posted some pics from way back in 2011… that’s Jack the first year I met him and his rawk-ous cast of gulls.
Harold, of course, will be going. He’s looking forward to some Voodoo Doughnuts and a trip to Powell’s. It’s never dull up in Portland. And I hear it is supposed to be getting into the 100’s up there. THIS I am not at all excited about, but the Convention Center is air-conditioned. Yay!
While I may not update here on the site…
