Cooker
When you live by yourself, cooking (unless a hobby) seems like too much work. When I was on my own, I ate a lot of rice… beans, frozen corn and hot dogs (I am not proud of this… ). If there was any sort of extravagance, I would make turkey burgers with a lovely slice of part skim mozzarella.
Yah. I think Randie wants more…. the ability to make a burger on the stove.
I use my stove now and then, but it’s the George Foreman grill and my slow cooker I can’t live without. :9

I’ve always loved cooking. But when I had my first apartment – lovingly referred to as “the bear pit” by my friends – I had the means to cook, but not the money for the ingredients. ($5.125/hr only went so far, even in 1980.) Still, I managed to scrimp enough for occasional into the world of cooking.
It was worth it. I picked up a Good Housekeeping cookbook when I moved out of the family house and I still have it over 30 years later. Beaten up, worn out, and now held together with three rings since the cover disappeared in 1990-something. But full of notes and tweaks to the recipes that our kids love to use, cooking “Dadoo’s way.”
When I was single and on my own in the military, I lived on canned soups heated in a hot pot, and occasional meals at the mess hall. But I learned cookery as a result of Boy Scouts, and can rattle pots & pans respectably.
My brother had a roommate for whom ‘cooking’ meant opening a can of spaghetti-os, setting the can on the stove to heat, eating it with a spoon, tossing out the can and washing off the spoon.

And the reason we need everyone’s votes is that it is logarithmic — your position improves according to whether you double your votes. Moving from 1 vote to 2 will really shift your position. Moving from 20 to 21 is less good; to 40 is much better.
And heating something in a pot is the first step. Also cheaper.
Next thing you know, you’ll be heating up some sauce and also boiling water for spaghetti!

Food offerings… heating stuff on the stove is way better than microwaved food. That stuff is so high in salt … hypertension nightmare!
Slow cookers are great! I made some chili last weekend (with organic stuff) that was really tasty if I do say so myself! It wasn’t terribly salty either. Chili go to the salty side if yer not careful.
Heating stuff in a pot is known as gateway cooking. People go from heating in a pot to baking, frying, braising…and before you know it, they’re doing stir-fry. It happened to me! Know the warning signs!
Er.. I… Am the opposite. I love good food so much I had to learn to cook to be satisfied. And I still pay way less than with premade food.
(and I’m a bit of an Enid sometimes with my cookies, except I use them for evil and to switch hours with coworkers)
If you don’t mind eating the same stew/casserole/other high-starch comfort-food for three or four days in a row, you can really save money by cooking for yourself. A neighbor gave me a zucchini, so I made “lasagna” with it instead of noodles, using sauce from a can ’cause it’s cheaper than sauce from a glass jar. I’ll be eating that stuff for DAYS… Yah… Freeze some for later–that’s what I’ll do.
Ha ha… cooking in a pot: gateway to cooking… I will agree… before you know it… she’ll be baking donuts and making cupcakes… with sprinkles! It could happen, Yat…

Rat… you have it down… that crockpot mentioned earlier could be put to good use… brown turkey meat… rinse a variety of beans and toss them in with frozen corn and lots of spices… heck! Get crazy and throw in onions and garlic… let it cook all day with some ketchup and olive oil… and voila! Dinner for days! Yes… and employ the freezer!
Heh – I was going to show up with wise mutterings about slow cookers… but it looks like I would be preaching to the choir.
I will also admit that I love pot roast cooked in a slow cooker.
I’ve loved pot roasts for a long, long time – my gramma used to cook pot roasts in a blue enamel coffee pot – the roast standing on end, tatties, neeps, carrots, tomatoes, garlic, and onions piled in around it, and water poured in to the top of the pile.
Then set on the back burner for about four hours.
That coffee pot was also used for corned beef, and occasionally for coffee….
Gods above and below, I think I will hit the store right now for a good roast….
The Auld Grump, I’ll get two or three meals out of it, unless I make it over to my girlfriend’s place…. How her mum knows that a pot roast is on, I will never know – but she ALWAYS shows up! (Not a problem – I am not above buying familial approval with slow cooked food….)
