The weather was warm, the grape leaves were turning… and the folks were incredibly hospitable and dawg-on-it, they’re downright friendly down in Paso Robles.
Yes, it’s happening in Paso Robles… There are over 200 wineries down there. They sprawl out, up, and around Hwy 46…. the lovely hills are dotted with oaks (go figure), olive trees, and now… rows and rows of wine grapes (not that long ago, there were just cattle roaming areas there in Paso… and apparently apple and nut trees). Now there’s wine grapes all over the place!
Whilst a’visitin’, Harold and I discovered Paso’s thriving art scene. We found the Pierce Modern Gallery where Harold fell in love with Michael Heath’s work. Rachel, the gallery hostess, was most friendly and we talked art for a bit. Also, too, the Art Studios on the Park welcomed us in for Open Studios. Harold met Rosey (the Printmaker)… that’s Harold & Rosey (Rosenthal) there… nice fella who likes the comics.
And look here…. right there on the park is The Red Scooter Deli & Cafe… and Harold found their delivery vehicle… (yup… a red scooter).
Wanna see more pictures from the Paso trip? Go to Squid Row Mama’s Flickr site… Harold had a bit too much fun wine tasting… he, oh well, you’ll see.
You’re getting the Friday post a bit early… as Harold and I are about to do a little traveling. Sometimes, getting away for a day or two is good for the health… mental and physical.
I feel a bit like Robert Louis Stevenson (of whom I’ve just finished up a Sunday about)… He did a great deal of traveling in his time… and he often was sick while doing so (RLS was constantly ill, practically from toddler age). I, too, am not feeling healthy. I’ve been plagued by a troublesome bug that has forced me to consume large amounts of tea & ridiculous quantities of vitamin C… and it’s grounded me from my bicycle… which makes me most unhappy. I feel like I’m on the mend though, which is good… but I’m not entirely “better.”
But the trip has been planned for some time, and I have my teas and whatnot packed. Harold has been most excited about the trip to Paso Robles and can’t wait to start tasting wine and surveying the pretty wineries at Harvest time. It’s Harvest Weekend in Paso, and the wineries are rolling out the wine-colored carpets and hosting musical type shindigs with food offerings and such. I don’t know how much wine I’ll be tasting, but I will certainly enjoy the food, the relaxation and the sunshine… and maybe a game or two of Bocci Ball.
This whole week, it seems, I have been obsessed with Vincent Price. Which, I might add, is fine… being that Halloween is nigh. I could blame this week’s full moon or the Halloween candy… but I’ve always rather liked Vinnie …He’s creepy, yes… but debonair … and had a delicious sense of humor. (as a note of interest, I used the word “macabre” in a recent toon). I’m pretty sure I was influenced. If you’re interested in some frightfully wonderful audio and visual Halloweenie Vincent Price, visit Vincentprice.org (Cue the scary music)… enjoy.
Here’s a little blurb from The Muppet Show…
This is from Kristin. She visited me at The Cartoonery this past ARTober Fest weekend. She’s a fan of the Squid, a budding cartoonist and is starting her very own comic, SplashDogs.
So, if you’ve done up any Squid Row Fan Art, send it to me and I will post it on the Squid Row Fan Art Page (don’t ya know). I love me some Fan art.
Squid Row Mama’s Flickr site now has some photos up from The Alternative Press Expo. (You can drop in anytime by just clickin’ the link above today’s comic entitled “Flickr”…)
