I’ve been dreading this strip, too. I’m not surprised you’re affected – you can’t be a good cartoonist (which you are!) without knowing and caring about your characters.
Alas, sad Randie returns. That SOMAS poster was so sad on its own.
Shelby,
Sorry bud, Skype is not a substitute for the real thing. You can sense other’s moods…happy, sad, angry, depressed. You get energy boosts and/or drains just by being around people. Ever eat a meal alone? Ever eat a meal at a restaurant? Ever watch a sports game alone? Ever watch a sports game in a sports bar? Ever watch a sports game in an arena or stadium? Ever watch a movie alone at home. Ever watch the same movie in a crowded theater? Sense a difference in energy? Sharing energy is part of communication. That’s just part of why internet courses pale compared to real ones.
Funny how Em is happy and oblivious, as Rye is mixed-feeling’ed and aware.
Separations are so sad when people have built up real connections.
Well, at least my “Matching-Nose Philosophy” for this strip has Em and Rye being a good fit.
And, Randie gets a Vespid in the deal. A PINK one. Hoo-Boy. Hey, maybe she can knit a sweater covering for it. Make it true moving art.
Oh, and speaking of SOMAS and art,
…brig,
…pics will be coming soon.
Enjoy all that is Sandy Eggo, both the sunny place and the yummy snack.
Having Randie laugh away her sadness (3-28) as Ryan was preparing to go was a nice touch then, but I’m glad that it was not used here. Real, genuine, honest sadness.
Then again, on a comic relief, poke-fun-at-grief, note….
Randie’s never struck me as much of a phone person. As, indeed, I’ll wager few artists are. A disembodied voice is never the right medium for a visually stimulated mind.
Unless something changes in Randie’s life, this is going to be a hard time for her.
To further the Skype idea- If Randie had Skype… she’d use it!
Kestralyn: Thank you! sniff sniff.
Stick: sharing energy is nice when it’s available to be shared. I think technology has tried it’s best to bridge the gap between people who cannot be in the same room at the same time.
that’s what Skype is for… she’ll have to borrow someones computer sometime 😉
Ooohhh. Poor Randie.
Brig: That’s emotional investment for you. That’s why I’ve been dreading the “goodbye” strip…

It’s never easy to say “Goodbye”. I’m glad that when I left Salinas, there were no regrets, just happy memories.

Shelby: Skype is perty good for peoples that have computers… but Randie has to use the library… Skype-less.

Pete… nah, I’m not either, really.
