I’ve been in this boat before… you can afford the rent, but you can’t afford to move in! You need a loan just to come up with the move-in fees! GaH!

Where I live, the rule is you can’t ask more than one month’s rent for a safety deposit (move in deposit). You only need to come up with two month’s rent to move in; being the first month’s rent plus the safety deposit.
The last time we rented out here in the east, it was first and last with a security deposit only $50 less than a third month’s. Almost $3000 to move into a one-bedroom in Garnerville, NY. (And that was in 1984.)
*sigh* At least you got a nice chunk of change back at when you moved out.
I worked briefly for a non-profit helping people make ends meet and getting into subsidized housing. You’d be amazed how many people end up either homeless or living out of a hotel for exactly this reason. And it turns into a complete catch-22– living in a hotel is more expensive than an apartment, so they can’t put aside any money to pay the deposit to move into an apartment.
Moving in is never that easy.
The infamous deposit… Yeah… And sometimes they ask you earn three times the rent in a month.
She also requires blood and urine samples.
I rent out a mother in law suite on my property. I had someone get into a screaming hissy about wanting first month and security. It was how I learned to never rent to family
I know that Rental institutions are covering their tooshes… My aunt rented her house out to people with a puppy… Sadly, said puppy ruined the newly remodeled woodwork. The deposit should’ve been MORE…
I don’t think the blood and urine samples would’ve helped there.
My point is that all the stupid people who aren’t conscientious ruin it for everybody and drive up deposits and the like!
