Summer Blues
I love the Calvin & Hobbes toon where Calvin proclaims that they’ve not had enough fun and summer is almost over… That toon was in my head when I was sketching this one out. Summer is nearly over, fall is nearly upon us… and there was lots more fun potential out there!
Someone’s grown too accustomed to school and months of summer vacation time.
I remember those Calvin & Hobbes sombre ‘summer’s over’ strips. “There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want.”
…but honestly, after spending two summers roasting in Southern California, I’m more than happy to welcome autumn!
Here in Arizona, this is about the time we start saying “OK, we’re ready for it to cool down now! C’mon!” It’s kind of like February in reverse.
At 35, I’ve come to this conclusion: If you’ve spent the summer having fun, you’re either under 18, or a trust-fund baby.
I spent 4 summers in Barstow as a teenager. So I was more than happy to have fall show up …. then. I gatta tell ya… I like fog and the marine layer. Dada, don’t you miss the fog?
Dawn…. true dat.
I totally miss the fog. All summer long my friends in San Francisco complained nonstop about the fog while I roasted in the Los Angeles sun…believe me, if I could summon the fog away from them and keep it in my bedroom I would.
While we’re talking about Calvin & Hobbes, does anyone remember Calvin’s rant about having to write A WHOLE PARAGRAPH about what he did over the summer? That’s one of the nice things about being an adult: no back-to-school assignments (…well, there’s no summer vacation either…aw, screw it).
I gotta be honest. Fall is my favorite season. Medical reasons play a small part, but I’ve loved fall for lots of other reasons ever since I was a kid growing up in Wisconsin. The change of the leaves; the crisp, clear nights (and crackling campfires!); the mosquitoes all going away; the fog in the morning; the beginning of school and a new grade; the coming of the fall harvest and related festivities; and the promise of the season drifting into a bright, cold winter and the cozy-warm times ahead with friends and family. (And more crackling fire in the fireplace!)
Dada… I love that one! …. summon the fog! “Fog! I summon thee! Come forward….” enter smog.
Pete… I do like Fall. I, too, like the crispness in the air. This year, there didn’t seem to be much of a summer. But this is the time of year that our area gets some gorgeous sunrises and some sunny days…. we’ll see if we get THAT. Randie… isn’t so much a fan of Fall.
