Do you know the way to… Portland?

Doo doo dooo do do do lah lah lah…

So this week I am heading off to Portand for 5 days. I am looking forward to being in the City of Roses… I’ve been to Portland a few times, and like it better each time I visit. Of course, there will be a visit to Powell’s City of Books… multiple floors of book-buying fun! I think a whole day spent there’d be alright! If you’ve not been, you are truly missing out! Me and my lovelies will be staying in the Pearl District and will also be visiting Voodoo Donuts… 24 hours of donut-eating fun!

You do have to be careful when driving IN Portland. You make one wrong turn and you’re on a bridge going over the river. This time around, there will be mass transit. The trains are most effecient in the downtown area.

So with this visit, I’ve decided to take advantage of the trip by bringing along Ryan. I’ve written in a storyline so I can take pencils and bristol board with me and work “on the road”… So stay tooned to see how Portland gets into the strip.

squiddies… that is to say fans…

Squid fans make me happy. Every so often, like the cephalopods in the deep, they come to the surface… and we talk… an’ I turn into a silly “aw, garsh” cartoonist… blushin’ and everything.

This particular fan (seen here) I’d heard stories of before actually meeting him.

I look small next to most everyone, it's true.

He’d approached a friend of mine at the Ol’Factory a few months back. She had a Squid Row button on her purse and he inquired about it… professing Squid readership. They chatted for a bit and then, with the stealth of a marine mollusk, he returned to the deep. His whereabouts were a mystery, as was his identity. But I knew he was out there… reading.

This past First Friday, RJ surfaced… and I was thrilled to make his acquaintance… finally (you can see the smiling). Thanks for dropping in on Squid Row!

look up!

If you look up from Gabilan Street, you’ll see Randie sitting in my office window. She’s smiling, she’s cheerful, she’s foamcore.

Every first friday of the month, Oldtown Salinas (where my office is located) has First Friday (um, so the name makes sense)… and businesses have snacks and drinks and folks meander around and duck in and out of shops. So I open up the office and mingle with my public. Now with Randie in the window sill, folks can see where I am… and where Squid Row lives.

I am prepared for summer…. I just need a holster, Han Solo-style!

I’ve got me a sweet squirting side arm!

So okay, I was floating thru a store recently and I came upon a large box of plastic squirt guns… Immediately I went into “third-grader” … (this would be where I would be begging my mother to make a purchase of said plastic weaponry… because I was actually a member of the Rebel forces masquerading as a third grader)…

I got all third grader-y this morning… in my mac’s photo booth. Certainly, Randie must have a squirt gun…
