Oooo la la!
Look! It’s The Cat in the Hat! Imagine that! but it’s a Beginner Book Dictionary in French! AND IT’S AWESOME! Ahem, C’est tres magnifique. Now I can say “Je mange huit oeufs. Il a mange onz oeufs.” (I eat 8 eggs. He ate eleven eggs…. je suis malade! … I think that means “I am sick”).
This is just before the book’s forward:
This book is based on the original Beginner Book Dictionary and was adapted into Beginners’ French by ODETTE FILLOUX of the Department of Linguistics University of California at San Diego.
Dr. Seuss (Theo), lived in La Jolla (not far from UCSD)… and so, he musta knew Odette… so I’m thinking. I don’t know why this interests me so much, except that I lived in San Diego for a number of years and used to go to La Jolla for giggles. The Hard Rock Cafe was there, and for a bored teenager, this was fun.
So I have my friend (and former French teacher), Shawn to thank for this lovely new book acquisition. She gave me this as well as a whole box of comic books in French… Lucky Luke, Tin Tin, and Asterix… tres cool!
So I already have a whole bunch of Squids written with this Dictionary as my muse. Randie, of course, finds this book at…. well, stay tooned, squidlings.
San Diego is truly awesome; it should rock really hard. But it doesn’t. Why? Musically and artistically, it’s a desert. Downtown is a slum. It has no soul. It’s even thinking about letting Anaheim have Comic-Con. ANAHEIM!
btw, are you coming to Comic-Con Brig? I’ll look for you if you’re there.
Sandy Eggo has really cleaned up since I lived there… The Gaslamp Quarter is quite the place to be… trendy bars and nifty shops. I visit my siblings every so often (they both live in The Gaslamp)… and I always enjoy myself so!
What do you base the desert-ness on? I’ve been away for awhile, but I’ve never seen it as void of music & art. La Jolla has an awesome Contemporary Arts Museum with a stunning view of the ocean… I’ve seen many a great show there…. Balboa Park is home to quite a few museums… and as far as music goes… there used to be a load of great local bands that I used to see… granted, this was the early to mid 90’s.
To answer your question about Comic-Con. It’s too big. I shy away from Massive Comic Events like that… I prefer the more intimate gathering… so I’m afraid I won’t be there. Have fun though… I hope it stays in SD… Anaheim lacks character… despite the nearby Kingdom.
I have to admit my experience with La Jolla is limited to an engineering office I worked at in the 70’s. I’ve always thought of it as a pricey luxury I couldn’t afford, so I avoided it. Musically, I agree that local acts in the club scene are fun, but not particularly innovative. Last I heard the SD Symphony was homeless and struggling; hopefully I’m wrong. I dunno, every time I go downtown, it seems depressing. Hillcrest has become yuppie gentrified, and the Gaslamp seems kind of artificial. I like funky beach areas, but I mostly visit Venice or Hermosa for that. Even those are going upscale. Maybe it’s just me.
Sorry I won’t see you at SDCC, but I understand. I had planned to travel more when I retired, but I seem to be busier than ever, so local events is all I get.
Anyway, keep recommending stuff you like; I pay much more attention to those than the random links on people’s pages, and when I get hooked on a new product or series, I am sure to let them know who referred them.
I agree about liking funky…
You remember Pannikin, no doubt. I used to live not so far from the Flower Hill Mall (a funky outdoor shopping place in Del Mar)… Pannikin had a coffeehouse there… with old hardwood floors… and the youths would hang there… there was music and entertainment etc. it had a nice vibe. THEN, the owners of the complex had a dispute with the coffee peoples at Pan’kin… and the Panners up and left after years of coffee-grinding. The complex remodeled the space with some slick new coffee shop going in… it was a dud… it flopped. Pannikin, and I am not sure of how it was achieved, went back into the space, but it was not the same. The funk was gone. It is one of the great tragedies of my remembrances of San Diego. Sniff.
Lucky Luke, Tintin, Astérix … I used to read those in my youth.
We have many live action movies for Astérix, with Gérard Depardieu : well … most of them are quite so, so … We also recently have one for Lucky Luke : I think this one ok. I heard that Spielberg wants to make a Tintin movie, with DiCaprio as the main cast …
Most of “French comics are drawn, or sometimes also written, by Belgians, like those three comics (though, Lucky Luke and Astérix have their scenarii written by the French René Goscinny, but still drawn by belgians). I also read the English translation for Astérix : not as good as in French, as there is a lot pun in this comic and thus cannot go well in English. But nowadays, we can a lot of French reading manga (including me :p).
Last thing before ending this post : it’s “Il a mangé onze oeufs” (yeah, I know we can’t type the e with “accent aigu” on an English keyboard…). Beside from that, it’s excellent ! Keep up the good work !
