I remember windy days in Wisconsin back in the ’60s. As kids at recess, we’d lean into the wind as far as we could without falling down. It was a lot of fun.
Less fun were the windy days in Arizona in the 70s. A big wind would start up and then you’d see an orange cloud in the distance coming toward you. It would hit with a vengence… DUST STORM! They last less than half an hour – most of the time – but they’d leave a quarter-inch of dust on the bottom of the pool.
The weirdest windy even I’ve seen was in Kingman, AZ in ’03, when it was a combination thunder/lightning storm and dust storm about an hour before sunset. The sky was indigo, the clouds pitch black. Lightning hitting the ground all over and countless dust devils being stirred up from the bursts of high wind. That was something! 😎
Grey… I am glad you are amused by the pooch… amuse pooch?
Pete… We would get the Santa Ana Winds in SoCal… you remember them, I’m sure… crazy&^%% wind. I don’t miss them… hot, dry… and often accompanied by fires.
Mary… Ha… whiplash! Hair lashing… braid lashing… etc.
I forgot about the Santa Ana’s, Brig. You’re right… they were nasty. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt a wind so HOT as those. I attended Garden Grove High School and the lockers were outdoors. When the Santa Ana’s came up during school, our lockers would turn into dust bags. And walking around was miserable.
Come live with us in Grand Coulee. Goes from no wind to blow you away! Fortunately I collect rocks so I’m good. Oklahoma is bad too–constant wind and usually enough to annoy you me a lot. We lived in Tehachapi, CA, and the wind there will blow a big person off the mountains!
I certainly felt like that yesterday when I went for a walk out on Dillon Beach with my dog!
I can’t describe it or explain it, but the look on that poor dog’s face is just … classic.

Where I live now is a marvelous place for wind. Sorta place where I may regret it if I don’t braid my hair before I go outside.
Shelby… your dog is still with you, yes?

Grand Coulee is a dam big dam in WA state, BTW, and I usually just pick up little rocks and carry them around in my pockets.
