Vets Day
There’s some story to this toon. I wanted to tie in The Red Baron and Snoopy. Snoopy, as you recall, fights the Red Baron in WWI. Charles Schulz would usually do a tribute toon on Vets Day… he would honor WWI & II vets or Bill Maulden (cartoonist who served in WWII)… But in referencing this, I didn’t want to do just a Snoopy toon. I took a different approach.
Thank you veterans, for your service to our country.
…if you had a phonograph you could play that lp you have in the frame in your studio. that whole first side is fun, as are most of the songs on side 2.
T’warnt nuthin, ma’am. I did it for the same reasons many other young men my age did it … we had the big hopes of meeting hot women overseas. 😀
BOY were we surprised when reality settled in. o.O
But still proud to have done my hitch anyway. How many people can say they have pictures they took themselves of the leaning tower of Pisa (and that what you cant see is the slice of pizza they are eating while taking the pic, from a pizzeria right across the street)?
As for the hot women … well, we DID find out that there’s a very popular nude beach in Greece … ::wags his eyebrows::
Ah, the memories …
My grandfather served in wwII, and Korea. Some of his stories were pretty interesting. I also have an uncle who served in Vietnam.
I had an uncle who, as I recall, served in the Navy during World War II. Currently, I have a brother-in-law serving in the National Guard.
Like you, I’m a fan of “Peanuts”. My collection includes a copy of “Peanuts 2000”, which contains Schulz’s last Veterans’ Day strip: a tribute to Ernie Pyle.
Ouch! It’s got to hurt to have that pointy roof sticking into your butt, but hey if it was good enough for Snoopy, it’s good enough for Ryan.
*quaffs a rootbeer for the veterans*
Nice Peanuts reference.
Thanks, Brig!
Like Rye, my family line has a veteran that we can trace through the geneology in every war except the War of 1812 and the Spanish-American War.
* – Militia Company Officer with one of the New Jersey Militia regiments that fought with Washington across that state
* – 104th New York Volunteers (Wadsworth’s Guards) in the Civil War
* – Grandfather won a Silver Star in the Meuse-Argonne Campaign in WWi
* – Father and Uncle served in the Navy during WW2: Dad in the ETO, Uncle in the PTO
* – I did 28 years as a Cold Warrior, retiring in 2003
But it looks like it’s gonna skip my children’s generation, too.
Firedome… Yes… that is one of my favorite recordings! Snoopy and the Red Baron… and it’s a Christmas Album. Not all the songs are Christmas… but I love that record and have since downloaded it from itunes so I can listen to it on my devices.
Grey…. those Euro-women… Warmer climes = more cheeky (so I hear). Anyhow… thanks for doing your part…
Squid… My dad did Vietnam. He didn’t like to talk about it much. Except that when they would get cool-aid in the mail, they’d make it in their helmets. Blecht.
James V. … My local paper ran an Ernie tribute by “Peanuts” toon on monday. Smiles.
Denny…. Yah… curious isn’t it? DOwn with pointy dog house rooftops!
Jack… tanks.
DCS… Wow… Most impressive military service going on there! And thank YOU! The military life (for all involved) is not an easy one! Moving… orders… stress, pressing uniforms (God Bless my Mah) etc.
My dad spent over 30 years in the Marines… his dad was in the Navy in WWII. I don’t know much beyond that… my sister is married to a Navy feller… a nice one at that!
