On to the comic…I’m not really sure why he called it the house of usher and I’m confused by his facial expression…but then again, I don’t always “get” everything so it could just be me.
I was unaware of the DAX/Trek thing… but I was schooled by Judy (a Trek fan) after reading G. Wolf’s comment.
Legacy… oh yes… Skulls with bows….
Chug… uh…
Mr. McDuff… ha Poe-Lease… wah wah…
Robert…. yes… puddy tat eyes from the Warner Bros toons… that’s what I think of…
Yat/Beagle … good, I was goin’ for that.
Dada… rats are intelligent… I would think that they would find a way to out-fox a snake… with their cunning skills… maybe offering the snake something like a pizza or the family cat.
Okay… Now for the reason I asked.
When I created this and ran it passed my in-house editor, I was cautioned about the “House of Usher” reference. If you are unfamiliar… there was a reason for the FALL of the House of Usher… something scandalous and unspeakable. (No spoiling this for you who do not know). Rat and Grace are a loving couple (obviously)… and the connection might be considered weird.
I, on the other hand, thought that mentioning the House of Usher was just for “Creepiness” … so the overall POE-ness is there…. did this read like this? or the weird other thing?
Pasha: Excellent. I am glad it read like that. Creepy… yes. Poe seems to be a crowd favorite…
Right, EofO? And I had fun writing for Grace for this week. She is one of the unexplored characters. And her grumpy/off-putting nature is just fun writing. And now she has a cat! yay!
Heh – I was all set with a big spoileriffic commentary about Poe’s, uhm… masterpiece. 😀 (Possibly the most overwrought prose that Poe ever produced. Full of ‘what?’ ‘WHY?!’ moments. :P)
I like Poe, but that was not his best work. (I would argue that The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket was his best – and had a sequel written by Jules Verne!)
The Auld Grump, Fall of the House of Usher was also the work of Poe that Lovecraft borrowed his style from, including a story with a house destroyed by lightening at the climax of the story….
uwg… certainly not anymore. Everything all the time from now on.
Grump… I am not as well-read on Poe. Most of what I know was what was assigned in high school or seen via Vincent Price. But, there’s time to catch up.
Legacy…. Did you know that Charles Dickens kept a few Ravens as pets… and this inspired Mr. Poe…. you’d never guess as to which work of fiction (?) …
Drfuse…. ha ha… novel… and as far as Grace’s apartment.. you KNOW she ain’t dusted since… well, forever!
The Poe-lease that they Grace must have on the place?
My cousin.
‘… is that a skull on that throw pillow?’
Which Dax? Jadzia, Curzon … ooo, Emony?
(wondering if I am only one here who gets that …)
they are so ugly ! is it hard drawing characters ugly like this on purpose ?
this is no offense to your art btw, just the two of them together ! ugh !
GreyWolf, I got it! ST:DS9 ftw! 🙂

Edgar Allan Poe
Big soulful eyes routine. Gets lesser mortals every time.
Poe
There’s plenty of people who think rats are cute…and plenty of other people who think they’re snake food.
Thanks, Squiddies all, for your feedback.

I personally love Poe, so the “House of Usher” reference I felt was just to show that Grace’s home is kind of creepy, but that they liked it that way.
I totally got it, Brig. Quite pro-Poe here. Also, delighted that we are seeing more of my gal Grace.

Rule of thumb: NOTHING is obscure on the Intertubes.

I’m rather fond of the Murders in the Rue Morgue, personally. Well written, the birth of the modern mystery, and partly inspired Sherlock Holmes =)
Love Poe, especially at this time of year! The reference to one of my favorite short stories was very “novel!” LOL!!
BTW, I bet Grace’s crib is as inviting as Usher’s.
