Transfixed
Some time ago, I picked up a Scott Pilgrim book over at my local library. The library had a nice graphic novel section and I was Scott Pilgrim curious and so I checked it out. It was paperback, black and white… and at the time, it felt rather Manga to me and I didn’t follow up with any of the sequels. I then saw it at Borders… (back when there was one)… and almost picked up another for giggles. But did not.
I did the same for the movie… I saw it had come out… and said to myself… “maybe I’ll see it or maybe I’ll see it when it comes to Netflix or DVD… and so I did so at the prompting of my friend, Walter. Loved it! AND then I had to go get the novels and read them… by this time… Hard cover FULL_COLOR awesome versions of vol 1-3 had been released… which are WAY worth the money!
And for whatever reason… they don’t feel so Manga to me, now.
“Scott Pilgrim curious” – why does it sound so … naughty … when you say it like that? ::snicker::
Never read them either but keep hearing so much about them think I might check and see if Amazon has them available later.
G Wolf… it does, don’t it…? Or there’s this thing called a library. If you like it, then you can buy it.
are you saying you’re a mangaphobe? with your art background, I figured you’d be much more open to it, especially your interests in the French desinees. same idea, just more story-driven. I’ve built up a modest collection of manga myself over the past 15 years (along with the anime tie-ins).
firedome… no, no… not a mangaphobe… I’m not afraid of it… it’s just not my cup of tea. Even as a youth, Japanese animation didn’t do much for me… Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets… etc… lost on me…
Godzilla monster movies… that’s another story.
Yay! for Godzilla, Mazinga and all their friends
@Brig
True (I know what a library is, Brig, I’m probably older than you are or at least close to it :P) but if it’s on Amazon then good chance it may have a set of sampler pages. For most books that’s enough for me to decide if it’s at least worth the risk of buying depending on its price, or should I go find an actual copy to check out first.
Even then, a B&N serves as well as a library and has pretty much become the modern version of one, complete with a Starbucks in it. 😀 Can read a bit and if I like the material can walk it on up to a cashier.
I just hate the people that sit there all day and read read read … but never buy. A B&N is NOT a library in that they are not publicly funded, so if you’re not buying, you’re helping to run them out of business. QUIT IT! 😛 You’re degrading copies that can’t be sold later and costing them money while you gain a benefit yourself. Either go to the public library or be willing to at least buy some books once in a while.
Personally, if I am perusing a book before I buy I always look for the one that already looks dogeared or stained. Figure that’s an unsellable copy that really only has a purpose as a demo anyway, so no harm done. No matter which one I grab, I handle it like Tom Hanks handling the Da Vinci documents at the Vatican archives, just as a matter of principle.
