Too Tired
Way back in the day… when there weren’t a million different energy bars on the market, I would eat TigerMilk bars. While they weren’t Mmmm-mmm-good, they were a pretty good snack that passed for something sweet and near-chocolatey.

I feel the same way about Granola, either the bars or the cereal. Might as well be eating tree bark.
In my backpacking days (also before the advent of all the health/profit conscious snack-makers), we’d pack along the original trail mix; GORP. A homemade mixture of Granola, Oatmeal, Raisins, and Peanuts (hence the name), it wasn’t bad at all. We’d sometimes mix in some M&M’s, too; the nice thing about backpacking is you burn a lot of calories and can easily justify the chocolate.
Of course, our favorite snack while hiking was jerky, the tougher the better. It replenished salt and took a long time to chew, which kept your mouth from getting dry.
Ha! That’s so Portland.
A lot of those companies pass off what they call nutrition and it may be worse than a candy bar. Some of the natural ingredients can be toxic in high levels and then some have lots of salt.
Randie’s going to be looking the sight when the wedding starts, and even worse later after her ride back. She’ll be dripping sweat with her clothes soaked through and stuck to her. Good thing she doesn’t wear makeup or it’d be running down her face.
So what’s with the hair?
No way with as sweaty as she already is and after wearing a full-size, over-the-ear helmet strapped to her noggin is her hair going to be looking as it does. It’ll more likely be soaking wet and stuck flat to her head. Maybe with parts sticking out that were stuck to the helmet as she pulled it off.
Wedding photos anyone? Gotta preserve and share those memories.
While I haven’t had any for a while now, I loved starting a day off with a powerbar. Reading the back of the wrapper, one of those things had 100% of about any vitamin you could ever ask for. Frankly, I do like granola and have fond backpacking memories of gorp (although in the real world, I don’t like raisins) The funny thing about huffing it in boots away from it all with a backpack carrying your tent, sleeping bag, food, clothes, climbing gear, utensils, toiletries, first aid, water bottle, etc. is that just about anything tastes great. I also recall raw, out of the foil wrapper, pop-tarts being so so good. And jerky, that stuff is good anywhere.
It not only tastes like a twig, biting into one is probably like biting into a twig. At least that’s how it is with granola bars.
Joe… really? I love me some granola… usually it’s pretty high in calories, so it’s more of a treat breakfast. I pretty well stay with morning oatmeal. Blood-sugar wise, it’s a good start.
Pete… GORP… yes… I like to add dark choco-chips. Mmmm. Turkey jerky… mmm, mmm.
Jack… hee hee… yes, you’d almost think that’d I’d gone to Portland recently.
Jay… How ’bout it? I ALWAYS look at labels now… and anything… including snack/energy bars. When we did our trip in Europe last time, we made sure we had plenty of oatmeal bars. Blood sugar issues come up when Judy and I don’t eat, so we have to be careful. We plan ahead.
stick… yah, okay…. the hair is a bit too nice for “helmut hair.” She should have those wavy stink lines, too (which was just in a Bizarro toon recently).
You don’t like raisins? Wow… nature’s candy is lost on you. Meh, more for me! But you like Pop Tarts, so everything’s fine. There’s balance there.
Yat…. True dat, Yat… True dat. And sometimes you have to pick out the little bits of leaf.
Energy Bars….hmph. Might as well eat a bowl of Frosted Flakes.
Bearman… too sweet… but theeeeeere GReeeeaaaat!
I’m still trying to think of where they could actually do that around here…
Oh dear God … tiger milk bars. I actually remember seeing those sold at local convenience stores when I was younger, living with Mom out in San Francisco. Remember eating one too … definitely prefer one of the newer chewy granola bars, that’s for sure.
They were healthy, sure, but those tiger milk bars tasted like peanut butter left out too long then spread over a piece of cardboard then given just a dab of honey to make them palatable.
::shiver::
Thanks for the memory … and the sudden reminder of how old I am. 😛
