Time O Year
After Memorial Day, it’s time to avoid certain places which get swamped with tourists… like the Aquarium, and Cannery Row, and the Wharf… unless by bike… then you can park and people watch (and people draw… like Randie).

Or a pickpocket. Crowds of tourists are to them like nectar is to hummingbirds …
Back in the Navy got in the habit of carrying my wallet in my front pocket anytime I am near crowds, for that exact reason. A really good pickpocket could still get it from me even then, without noticing, but it filters out the majority of them. 😀
Aquarium? Cannery Row? The Wharf? I’ll have to take a side trip and check those out….. 😉
Grey… pickpockets are a sad reality in touristy places. In fact, this summer, I am going to some French places… and I will be extra careful about how I carry my things. I have my “Euro Bag” (bag I bought for travels in Europe) that is a Pac Safe bag… I must tell you, this bag is super awesome! It has clasps on all the zippers and inside pockets. It rests easy on my back and is super travel-able.
Yat… Aquarium… of the bestness! It’s world class! Fisherman’s Wharf (where barking has just been reinstated… “get your clam chowder here!”) and Cannery Row… which is a bit… touristy and Disney-like, but worth the trip… you simply must come!
I’ve lived in “touristy” destinations–you come to despise the idiotic tourists very quickly. But I suspect those people would be the same at home, too. Loud, obnoxious, rude, and sure they are the only reason the spot exists, in spite of the year round people who actually live there! I love to travel in the off season when it’s much quieter. And yes, my momma taught me manners!
We don’t get a whole lot of turistas where I live – because come on, who in their right mind wants to go to Ohio? 😉
i like tourists (although detroit is hardly a tourist mecca). they have fresh eyes, so they see what they look at without getting stuck in their own heads,
my twitchy hand posted that before i was done. they are uninhibited about asking questions. they dress comfortably and often colorfully, and they are always looking forsomething new or different to try. granted, some are jerks but by no means all. to me it seems like a pretty good permanent lifestyle.
as to pickpockets, in they navy my co made us get thin wallets and carry them in our socks. he didn’t want bulges ruining our uniform lines. i spent a lot of time when ashore in some very crowded cities, and never lost my wallet.
Yeah, we’d heard about stashing the wallet in our socks, too, but I usually had so much in my wallet that even if it didn’t make it look like my leg had been broken, it would still give me a limp after a while – plus a serious heat rash on my ankle. o.O
Though the sock was good for one other trick we’d learned: leave $20-40 in your wallet, hide the rest in your sock. That leaves you enough for basic shopping, just go hide in the bathroom while you fish more money out of your sock, if needed.
Why? So if you’re mugged you only lose what’s in your wallet. If that was all your cash, you’d really be hurting. If you hide all your money, the muggers will see that empty wallet and keep looking. This way, they get just enough out of your wallet to figure they’ve cleaned you out, but most of your money stays safe.
Unless you get hit by a thorough mugger who checks everywhere. Not much you can do, then …
Ruth… Tourists here are the lifeblood of our economy… I do enjoy watching them… They have “touristy” behaviors and ways that amuse me. Just don’t get stuck behind them in traffic. But it’s fun to watch families and their dynamics (so long as the kids aren’t in meltdown).
Uwg… Ha ha … I’m searching the reasons now… Lets see … Columbus is … Well… There’s that bookstore that has like ten rooms…in Germantown… That’s a reason… But may not be worth the airfare.
Anatman….Detroit… Yah… You need to get some artists… They have a tendency to come in and clean up spaces because of the low rents… This drives up the property values and then everybody wants to live there and it forces the artists out… Detroit needs to market itself to the artists. Do this …and they will come.
Sock wallets… I bet they make some that wrap around with Velcro … It’d be easy enough to make and market fer sure…. Because its smart.
Grey… Proper traveling money management is super important… We will be employing some of that when we travel to France next month.
