Time Flying
Fall gives way to… Christmas. If you’re like me, I feel that Thanksgiving gets the short end of the stick. Christmas hogs the holiday front. Don’t get me wrong… I love all that Christmas is… But I think that popular culture and retail makes a mess of it.
We tend to skip halloween, over here (obviously we don’t have thanksgiving at all). They start selling christmas decorations at the same time as halloween ones, if not before.
Still got 5th of November, though.
In my part of the country, the first sign of fall is when daylight saving time ends.
Great timing on this comic what with tonight being daylight saving’s fallback hour.
Yeh, Christmas can “hog” the holiday front. Or you could be Jewish or Muslim. There are also those who look forward to Christmas skiing with slopes free of crowds. Oh, and lest us not forget Festivus, ala Seinfeld.
Ah, popular culture… Saint Nicholas becomes Saint Nick or Santa Claus.
I love Christmas… or rather, I love Christmas at home, where we strike a balance between what it means to us spiritually and the fun bits that aren’t as connected to Jesus. Mangers and stockings for us; Stick, we actually do talk about St. Nicholas too, at our 4-year-old’s level.
Now, as for commercialized Christmas? No. It is an abomination and I can’t stand how the stuff is in the stores in late September/early October now. And the holiday commercials telling us to buy, buy, buy! Ugh.
Theese days halloween is just a blip, Thanksgiving does not exist, and Christmas starts in September!
Happy November 5th, Dave…. What’s November 5th?
Yat… Happy Fall!
stick… it was good timing, eh? It really felt like fall today! Chilly… and yah… Christmas is the biggie. Since I’m working on the zine and planning for a Christmas First Friday… I’m in Christmas already now.
TLK… Me, Too! I do love me some holiday time! I am with you on the over-commercialization. I find it funny every time I watch A Charlie Brown Christmas where Chuck is bummed out over the over-commercialization of the holiday… and that was in the early 60’s! Yah… I did a face plant when a month ago I saw a stand up Santa next to a scarecrow with jack-o-lantern at CVS. sigh.
Squid… Ha! Seems like, eh? But Halloween seems like a little more than a blip though.
Brig: November 5 is Guy Fawkes’ Day, AKA Bonfire Night. I’m not on Dave’s side of the pond, but we still recall some of these things in Canada even if they aren’t celebrated. Or maybe I just read too many books set in Britain. It even came up in Harry Potter once. 😉
As to the strip – we blew through fall weeks ago where I am, though the leaves hung on through several snowfalls. It was definitely winter by last week. Except today warmed up again and a bunch of stuff melted, so either we’re going to have a lot of ice in the morning or things’ll be slushy for a while.
Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…
Tonight as a family we have baked potatoes for dinner, watch “V for Vendetta”, then celebrate the end of the movie with candy/caramel apples. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/)
Yeah… we’re a strange family. And we love it! 😀
Pete, your family rocks. You adopting? 😀
