To quote Whip It: “And, honestly, if I can give you one teeny, tiny piece of advice, it is this: DO NOT DATE A BOY IN A BAND!
But if you insist on blithely ignoring the above wisdom, DO NOT GIVE HIM YOUR BELOVED STRYPER SHIRT. You will never see it again.”
(Note: book is aimed at teenage girls, and I only finished it because I was curious about the movie. Do not necessarily recommend.)
Incidentally, there’s nothing remotely sexy about Bob-ombs, but at least they weren’t as butt-ugly as some other Mario villains (imagine if they called themselves Sex-Thwomp, Sex-Sledge Brothers, or Sex Cheep-Cheep!)
Mooning about after someone you’re not going to get (whether because you’re too chicken, the person is committed to someone else, or because it’s just not a good match) is often not actually about the person you’re mooning after, it’s about setting yourself up in a failure-assured situation so that you never have to actually try and risk actual failure.
Heh… my now girlfriend managed to convince me to join her British/Celtic style punk band…. (I accepted in part because now I can say ‘back when I was in a punk band…’ 😛 )
That worked… about as well as could be expected…. (Not well – one gig, then it broke up.)
But performing as a duo has been working fine – we had our first paying gig a year ago, and three since.
Since punk didn’t really work out* we are doing folk music, mostly for a history class…. (Somehow we got labeled ‘educational’ – mostly because I used a few bits of history to flesh out an otherwise rather sparse set. I stole the technique from Utah Phillips.)
Took her a few years to catch me, but we are dating – six months now.
So… while I cannot speak to the wisdom of dating somebody in a band, I can say that dating somebody that you perform with is a lot of fun.
The Auld Grump
* By ‘didn’t work out’ I mean that some folks in the band just plum hated each other. Hurt the rehearsals, killed the gig.
Hee. Although the book didn’t do much for me (might be a fun read for others, though, I’m just not the target audience), roller derby as a subject is still pretty awesome. 🙂
British and Celtic punk… is not very far apart from folk music. There are many, many folk songs that have had their rhythms changed and made… punkish?
One type of music is about drinking, fighting, sex, and the general unfairness of the world. The other… … … Okay, there is no real difference. 😛
Dropkick Murphys, the Pogues, Flogging Mollies… all have folk tunes that they have made their own. Heck, Chumbawamba began as a punk group. (Not sure they qualify these days, but good stuff.)
I prefer the quieter, more acoustic, folk music, she prefers the harder edged punk versions. We find a middle ground.
And Abney Park… not a middle ground, but they make us both smile. (They made a steampunk version of Derelict, which I mentioned a few weeks back – so they too have a folkish connection.)
There is also a fair amount of punk music about World War I.
***WARNING an example of the Punk/Folk Connection on Youtube follows***
*** Further Warning – Much is straight up folk, sung by punk groups….***
And not punk at all, but the kind of song that we sing for schools – The Boatman’s Cure – http://www.mulesong.com/songs/boatman2.html Someday Megan and I want to make a video with us performing this one.

McDuff… You have the good advice there. I did not know, however, your reference… but found it in Wikipedia. I am schooled… a little.
Ex Bob-omb?

Dada… just Ex-Bob… no Bob-ombs… Formerly known as Bob.

Chug… That is a good assessment… In matters of the heart… Mouse is setting himself up for failure.
Grump… Hey! It’s work’n out for yer band mate & you, yah? Punk to folk!? Is there such a thing as folksy punk? …or punky folk?
