Squidrow 2010 09 19 Jazz
I love jazz. And this weekend is the Monterey Jazz Festival. This year Harry Connick Jr. is one of the headliners. If the tickets warn’t ridiculously expensive… I’d go. None the less, it’s a great appreciation of a truly American artform. And yes, I dig Count Basie, Sinatra & Dizzy. Ella… four would have been too many.
I, too, am a fan of the Peanuts comic strip and animated specials. I have most of the reprint books, as well as the DVD set of This Is America, Charlie Brown.
I enjoy some jazz – proper jazz, that is… not that modern stuff…
Like the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain put it: “You know why they call it modern jazz, don’t you? ‘Cause the word [mild expletive deleted] was already taken.”
And any fans of Doctor Who and jazz might like this YouTube clip of UK comedian Bill Bailey reimagining the Doctor Who theme tune as 1960s Belgian jazz, complete with (relevant) French vocal š
Listing jazz greats or favorites has the same problem an AA member has with taking a drink.
I love how Kai *talks* like a jazz musician. XD
We LOVE Peanuts!
I remember watching both “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” when they first aired in 1965 and 1966 (I was 5 and 6 years old, respectively.) They were WONDERFUL!! And to this day I respect A Charlie Brown Christmas over all TV Christmas Specials. I love a lot of the others, but this is the only one to actually give the true meaning of Christmas; the birth of Christ. And Linus says it so simply and so purely, anyone who hears it will hear only joy in the message.
Tidbit 1: The “Charlie Brown Theme Song” we all associate with Peanuts is actually named “Linus and Lucy”
Tidbit 2: Aluminum Christmas Trees, which had been wildly popular from the mid-50s until 1965, were virtually put out of business after A Charlie Brown Christmas first aired, deriding the commercialness and phoniness of the modern day Christmas spirit.
These tidbits were brought to you by: Charlie Brown Electronics! Remember, everything can be dealt with by simply saying, “Rats!”
Astragali: Thanks for the YouTube clip… funny. Le French est tres funny. (Amusant).
The Charlie Brown Specials, esp. Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving… are near and dear to me! AND the Soundtrack for the Christmas special is on my top 10 list of “Brig’s Favorite music”…
sidenote: You all know that Amazon has special edition Peanuts Moleskin journal/sketchbooks for sale, right?
