Spill Dad
I had lunch not that long ago with the REAL Spill. I happened to mention that I had been listening to motivational speakers on YouTube. It was then that she told me that her step-dad was Earl Nightingale… a motivational speaker from the 50’s. She said he was… well, I think this cartoon sums it up pretty well.
And Happy Father’s Day to all you Dads out there. Spill’s dad has a pipe… and that is to honor MY dad, who has passed on. Happy Father’s Day, Pops.
DADS ROCK!!
oops. was I shouting? sorry.
Earl Nightingale was a wonderful speaker. I listened to him every night. To my Dad, who is now gone, Happy Father’s Day.
Check out a poem by beat poet Dick Lourie, “Forgiving our Fathers”. A modified version of this was used at the end of the film “Smoke Signals”. I read it at my father’s memorial.
Our Dads stay with us, for good or ill. My Dad was an encouraging, imaginative man who let me know every day that I was valued, loved, and very, very clever. He passed in 1998 and I carry him with me always.
I never met my biological father, but my step father always did his best by me. I do wonder what my birth father would have been like and if he’s still alive and what not, but I love my stepfather like he was my birth father. I won’t say real father, because my step dad always did his best to be there for my brother and me even when we didn’t see eye to eye. So he is definitely my real dad where it counts.
My father sincerely believed that his position was that of an authority figure and provider only, never to be a friend or teacher to his children. In the end this was a mercy, for when he passed away, he did not leave an empty place in my life.
My dad died in 1999 and I stll miss him, but I really miss his dad. He was the man who shaped my opinions of what a man shoul be, I miss him and my grandmother every day. They were kind, generous, never said a bad word about anyone that I can recall, loved each other to their dying day, and gave me a moral compass to live by.
earl nightingale, eh? some of his found their way to my house when I was young…perhaps if my family (myself included) had paid more attention to them…
First time I read this, I thought Randie said “dadaism”, so the rest of the strip made NO sense and left me scratching my head.
So I read it again and realized I probably need to clean my glasses more often. But it made a LOT more sense that time around. 😀
Thanks for the Dad’s Day wishes, Brig! Our five sons made it a great day for me! Grilled cheeseburgers, an invitation to game online with them, almond lace cookies and homemade pretzels… a fun day!
As far as motivational speakers go, Chris Farley may not have been the most effective, but he was certainly the most entertaining one! “You’re gonna be eating a steady diet of government cheese and living in a van down by the river!”
Squiddies all… thank you for sharing… So much of our lives are shaped by our parents. And I imagine that having Earl Nightingale as a father would have been a very positive experience.
Dad Day has been a bit of a hole for our family the past few years… more of a day of missing and remembering but now there are a few new dads in the family of late… so there are some happys with new additions!
Dadaism… how Scapula/Surrealist of you, GreyWolf…
Chris Farley… scare’m straight!
Well, Randy’s an artist, so I think my mental autocorrect is at fault for that one. 😀
