Spam Soup
I am careful about my salt intake. Spam has a ridiculous amount of salt. So right off the bat you got shrivel-ability built in.
Saimin is a real soup… how it is prepared is sometimes up to the preparer. But Hawaiians love their Spam… so that’s comfort food.
Hawaiin’s also love their Saimin. At least back in the 80’s it was a standard menu item at all McDonald’s. Spam by itself, however, was not. Probably because Spam is a trademarked name.
In Hawaii, Spam is often called Hawaiian steak.
Tropics can desalinate you just as quick as they dehydrate you. I’ve known heat waves even up north where I live to leave me so desalinated that a dill pickle doesn’t taste salty.
Actually, some new studies suggest that to little salt can be just as damaging as too much.

“We’ve noodles, noodles and ginger, noodles, ginger and Spam, Spam, noodles, ginger, green onions and Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, cabbage, Spam, Spam, and Spam, or Anchovies, Pop N Tarts with a side of Spam.”
“Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spamitty Spaaaaaam!”
Spam, making a comeback!

That wasn’t discovered recently. Salt is essential to life and people have known that since ancient times. . . there were kings who offered you a choice between a month without salt or having your head chopped off, and the wise man chose the later as less painful, given they were equally fatal.
There is an African soup, hot, spicy, with chicken and hard boiled eggs that I can never remember the name of.
In my head it is labeled Dubious Soup… but it is delicious.
On the flip side is a dish from Korea called Bipbimbap… best way to describe it is something that you have on a Thursday – tasty, easy to make, and nothing special. I like it a lot. The name just means ‘mixed meal’. 🙂
But for me the ultimate comfort foods are pot roast, corned beef, or the old standby cinnamon rolls…. I was unsurprised that this last was also one of my girlfriend’s comfort foods – I made some for her after a nightmare.
The Auld Grump
pot roast…now THERE’S a comfort food!
Comfort foods…ah, just the thought!
Mac & Cheese, Chicken & Dumplings, Meatloaf, Jell-O…
Great, now I’m hungry.
Real macaroni and cheese… made with real cheese, and maybe a bit of ham….
Chicken fried steak, with sausage gravy….
The Auld Grump, I’m a foodie… I have lots of comfort foods….
My comfort foods include pho noodle soup, (not sure how that one became a comfort food for me as I’m not Vietnamese but I love the stuff and on a cold rainy day it can’t be beat) sushi, (somehow I have an affinity for Asian food even though I’m not Asian) Sheppard’s pie, and almost any kind of Italian food.
Oh, and @Dada: Shut up… shut up… you bloody vikings. Always going on about spam.
Oh, I almost forgot. Another one of my comfort foods is the same as one of the Grumps. Chicken fried steak, with sausage gravy! When I go for breakfast at a restaurant I almost always order that with a side of eggs.
Comfort food? Turkey with stuffing and gravy.
