Shoulda Known
Ever since I’ve been sticking to “foreign” liquors (non-domestic) and wines, I haven’t had any migraines… no hangovers…. and a generally much better alcohol tolerance. Don’t know why… I’m also eating more organic and non-GMO foods… coincidence? Granted, I don’t go way overboard, like Harold…. still, it makes me wonder.
In America, we have a Wonderfull institution called the F.D.A. Whitch insists that we need chemicals in our food and drinks to shorten our lives.
In Europe for example, I can party like it’s 1699, and still wake up at 6:00
a.m. ready for a run and able to function properly. Whereas, here in America, If I have just a couple of drinks, I cannot function before at least two in the afternoon.(:
I have never had a hangover in my life – a fact that annoys my girlfriend. I just make sure that I stay hydrated.
On the other hand, I am a notoriously short hitter – she weighs about half of what I do (I clock in at just under 180) and can drink more than I can.
My drink of choice is a cider shandy – hard cider and ginger beer, drink of the true wimp. 😛
Other wise, when drinking I tend to favor beers (stouts and bitters, mainly), ciders, and perry.
The Auld Grump – I not only nurse a drink, I raise it through childhood and then send it off to a good college….
Better grade liquors tend to process better. Cheap booze will kill ya.
If I drink any alcohol after about 8:00pm, I’ll sleep through the night, but won’t be rested in the morning. Save for one accidental drunk back in ’83, I never over imbibe and feel I’m the better for it.
From what I’ve heard (I get sick to my stomach on any amount of alcohol, so don’t drink) a hangover is mostly do to dehydration and losing a bunch of vitamins. I’ve heard a tall glass of water or orange juice with a multivitamin before you go to bed is a good way to avoid hangovers.
squid man… I agree. Whilst in France, I was taken aback when I was able to eat and drink like the French, and not wind up with massive headaches. Pastis in the afternoon, wine with dinner, a rich dessert, and digestif. No hangover…. no awfulness… just joy.
Grump… you are terribly fortunate! No hangovers??? WOW. AND a Cider Shandy! Oh, yay! I had a Lemon Shandy in a pub in London and it didn’t do much for me… but a CIDER Shandy… that’d be more up my alley!
Wil… Yes, the Grand Marnier, the fine port from Portugal…. the organic reds from Paso Robles… I do better with those… quality being higher.
Pete! Welcome back! Still shaking the ice off your nose? Hope you are warm now that you have power again… Yes, I don’t rest well if I drink before bed either. I fall asleep easy enough, but wake up 2 ish in need of water.
McDuff… THAT is a good hangover cure. Multivitamin… also a piece of bread to soak up the poison. Heck… how about a full course meal?!!!
It’s a funny psychological quirk that we tend to see our future selves as someone else. We’re having fun NOW, that other person can worry about the consequences.
poor randie. yet another victim of hyperbolic discounting. i’m with the auld grump on alcohol preferences. not that it matters much since i only have one or two at most drinks per year.
