The first time I was assigned to Korea, I spent several months eating ramen… to the point where I rarely indulge in it if I can help it. Although I did develop many, many recipies to vary it.
If Randie lived here in South Dakota, she might be eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). I’d expect a similar program to exist in California.
Val… Randie has never really shown much promise in budgeting and planning. Everything is pretty loose when it comes to math and forethought. Ramen is the result.
Pat jade… Yah… You can overdo it on a particular food and it is ruined forever… Like divinity… Can’t touch the stuff.
JP… We have food banks, but those are non profit and/or church organizations. We also have a food stamps program.
Jack… I thought that was pizza! Randie would argue Pop’n tarts!
Ramen was not as available in my “starving early 20s” years, so I had a lot of the Jiffy Corn Muffins and Blueberry Muffins. Spaghetti add a bit of variety, as did fried turkey bologna.
… eggs are my “I don’t feel like making anything special” or “there isn’t much in the fridge” food. An omelet is most filling, not a whole lot of prep… and is still pretty cheap. But… no more eggs for you, eh? Beans, yah?
For a time I was homeless and was “camping” in the woods, the only cooking tool I had was a pot and pretty much the only food I could afford was ramen noodles. I thankfully knew a little about Oregon wild plants as I had grown up camping and would find inventive things to add to ramens to vary the flavor, fresh blueberries and blackberries picked off the bush served as desert. Its amazing what you’re willing to find to add to ramen when you’ve been eating it for a few too many meals in a row.
Was about 10 years after I got into a better situation before I ate ramen again and its still a rare occurrence for me.
Randy needs to find grocery outlet. Last time I was out west I could get about a cart of food for $10. Be it was mostly pancake mix ramen ground beef and a 12er of beer I’ve never seen before or since. Smack ramen 20 for a buck that deal was the jam
Heather… that must have been a challenge for you… living in the woods. I was just listening to an interview with a cartoonist (a podcast I listen to… Inkstuds…) and the cartoonist spent some time living in the woods as well. I wish I could remember the name of the fella…. It might’ve even been on the “Ink Panthers” podcast …. dang it. Anyhow… creative eating there for sure! You would be a survivalist… you qualify!
Z for sure! There used to be a place called McFrugal’s here… same idea. I loved the place.
Pasha… YUP! and frozen corn and peas…. and Yup yup… Randie likes them all!
Story of my life, Randie and I have so much in common… it’s kind of scary. O_o
Ouch, after the planning, Randie’s going to learn to use a budget book… Butyeah, been there, done that, cook my own ramen now…

The breakfast of champions!
Pasha… Maybe we are stalking you… Buh buh bum!

Pete… aha ha… I know said corn muffins! Love them! Still have them now and again! Add frozen corn for something different.
i like randie in the first panel. zooming along on her bike, hair riding her slipstream, slightly cockeyed sunglasses. nice sense of motion.
back in the prevegan days, i used to get cheap eggs and chicken broth at the food co-op. i used them to make a sort of egg drop soup.
anatman… Thank you… she does zoom, don’t she?

Randie needs Grocery Outlet very, very badly.
To the memory of Momofuku Ando (1910-2007) inventor of the Ramen noodle – a man that changed many lives, in a small, but definitive way.
I tend to do things like fry up an egg, chop it up, and toss it in with the noodles. Eggs add protein, and are also pretty cheap.
The Auld Grump

I just toss raw eggs into my Ramen while cooking it, (I beat them first) sometimes I add cut up hot dogs too if I have them.
Hey! I just noticed that Randie also likes Shrimp Ramen! Once again a scary parallel. <__>
