To save anyone else the trouble, Ryan’s last line translates loosely to “first, you must endure”. Yeah, I had to look it up and figure I can’t be the only one. 😀
Thanks, GreyWolf – you’ve saved me having to type it in! : )
Well, no wonder Ryan is such a nice guy… he’s a Pisces! My own birthday is tomorrow, the 20th, and my not-so-secret hopeless Internet crush was born on the 16th, 10 years later and 4 days earlier than me. (That pretty 54-year-old is asexual… EVERYONE is in her Friend zone!)
And Happy Early Birthday, Kirwar… I hope it is awesome enough. May all these birthdays shine… I do hope Ryan treats himself to something sweet! The vending machine outside of the Lit Department ought to have some OreOhs… or something…
That vending machine may very well have Lorna Doons, a very literary snack, and delicious! That’s the cookie we never asked Mom for as kids because we wanted “OreOhs” instead!
I haven’t thought about Lorna Doons in years! And do you remember the Forever Yours bar? It was my favoritest candy bar in the world! (they were discontinued in the late 60’s, but reincarnated in 1990 as “Milky Way Dark” and morphed today into Milky Way Midnight
Jenn… Hemingway was part of that Parisian scene in the 20’s and 30’s. I don’t know if it’s really Ryan’s favorite read, but he had to do a paper on him anyways.
Incidently, Hemingway would sign his letters with the quote in the last panel.
I guess there are no Hemingway reader fans here.
Kirwar… Ihope you’ve been enjoying your birthday… Perhaps it included Lorna Doons…. Me hopest so.
Rich… don’t get me started. I had a great fondness for Milky Way bars… it is why Randie loves them so! And the more Midnighty the better.
Brig: I was informed of Hemingway’s interesting signing habit (as well as his favorite drink, oddly) earlier when talking to said Pocket Philosopher, who is a heavy Hemingway reader. After the discussion I went out and bought a copy of ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. Hey, good book!
……. then I had to go out and get into a bar fight because reading too long gives me headaches, and getting punched in the head tends to oddly cure them. Le bien qui fait mal, oui?
When I was a kid I could sing “I’d fly to the moon… for a Lorna Doone!”, sung by a parrot in the TV ad (alas, absent from YouTube at present). But I’d never tasted one till they came as a midnight snack during a recent hospital stay. Cookies aren’t on my diet nowadays, but if I’d known how good they were, I’d have begged Mom for some instead of Nabisko’s answer to Hydroxx. : )
Jenn… Goodness!
Well, you and Judy like “The Old Man and the Sea.” I must read it myself. Mr. Hemingway, interestingly enough, wrote the Forward to Kiki of Montparnasses’s auto biography.
I hope that you are well recovered from your “mischief.” Wait… are you Rizz of Scapula? I am beginning to think so.
Kirwar…. mmmm…. cookies. My downfall. *^%%%$$ those girl scouts! and all those yummylicous thin mints!
Happy Birthday Judy and Ryan!

Happy Birthday Judy! Bonne anniversaire!
Happy Birthday, Ryan!

Grey Wolf… what you translated is, indeed, true. It shows that Ryan has been doing his research.
Well, a happy birthday indeed……. can’t say I was ever much for Hemmingway, but it seems like Ryan’s packet of fish.
Hm, my Pocket Philosopher is also a Pisces…… and he’s really quite a nice guy…… maybe there’s something to the whole astrology thing.
