Dolly is actually based on a “passing person” in my life.

I was having breakfast at a nice hotel in San Francisco with my lovelies… and the pastry chef caught my eye. She was interesting; she seemed melancholy, and I immediately started wondering about her life, where she’d been, how she got this job, where she went after her shift was over. I drew a sketch of her as I finished off my $12 bowl of oatmeal, knowing that our paths would probably never cross again.

I love being a cartoonist. You can take this person that you will never meet again… and give them a life of your own.
