There’s some pretty amazing art out there made from plastics found on the beach … The Monterey Bay Aquarium presently has an exhibit showcasing some. It’s a sad thing to see birds dying from ingesting plastic bottle caps, and things that WE as Earthlings are careless enough to pollute our oceans with. Odd Todd (Rob), here, is doing his part to keep our beaches free of icky plastic debris. Here’s an article of interest.
Hmm… could Randie have met her match through matchmaking by Squish? We shall see. I’m kind of liking Odd Todd (Rob).
If only Randi could find a natural Paint-Spill somewhere, or maybe a Canvas-patch!
The only real winner in many artists careers is the guy selling them their supplys.
Kinda like the Remington Company selling Razor Blades, but giving the Shavers away!
. . . or was that Gillette?
Don’t get old, kids! Memory is the first thing to go.
(Actually the memory is FINE. It’s just that my neatly-arranged file Cabinet-like Mind has had all the File Folder TABS cut off and I can’t FIND anything anymore!)
I’ve long been a supporter of Midway Island and the work they do there. I gave a presentation on Midway at our dive club meeting just last month, and the saddest photos were of two Laysan Albatross chicks (gooney birds) that had died because their stomachs were so full of plastic that there was no room left for real food.
The amount of plastic that comes up on some of the more remote islands of the Pacific is shocking. And there’s no one country to blame: We all have our share of guilt.
One person’s trash is another person’s art…or food if you’re a Gull.
Grammy… what do you like about OT?
Leo… a canvas patch would be awesome! Springs of flowing paint would be great… I recently saw a video of someone painting with coffee and raspberry juice… and why not? But coffee isn’t getting cheaper… no… but there is a use for those coffee grounds, Randie… other than the garden.
Oh… and try learning another language, Leo… apparently brains like that sort of thing… the news said so.
Pete… Yes, those little birds with plastics in their bellies makes me sad. I certainly had that in mind for this toon. Good on you for supporting.
Jack… I am afraid to look in GULLS’ stomachs!
I’ve long thought that Greenpeace or one of the other groups, should buy an old “Whaling Factory Ship” (The HUGE ones, with the ramp) attach boom arms and use it to “Skim” the Garbage Patch. The stuff’s floating at or just below the surface and installing a conveyor-belt on the ramp to pull it in is a no-brainer bit of engineering. De-watering and sorting would result in readily re-cyclable plastic pellets that can serve as replacement feedstock.
Also repersentative “Samples” could be used to identify just WHO’s responsible for the stuff, in the first place, and they can be sued for recovery costs.
If it’s YOU’RE stuff that went “over the side,” then YOU are RESPONSIBLE for it!
Brig, I kind of like his “Can Do” attitude about both cleaning up the beach and using the stuff that he cleans. I’m all about up-cycling and recycling.
Can’t fault his logic. I don’t see Randie dating him, but they would make good friends.
Once, when I was out trolling for salmon, the guy on the boat in front of me was changing his bait and throwing the styrafoam trays that the bait came on into the water. We fished them out, and when we got back to the dock later that evening, I handed them to him and said “you dropped these”. He didn’t have anything nice to say.
Leo… It seems like we could do more with the garbage patches of floating plastics… but it seems like outta sight outta mind… Maybe we can build on these… floating cities of garbage could be the “bottom layer” of… NAH.
Gramy… I must say that the Monterey Bay Aquarium has fostered some of these ideas… I live near a fantastic institution that makes others aware of the dire need to keep our oceans clean. I like up cycling. I think we have no good place to put what we deem garbage. I hate that we just throw things away not thinking about the creative ways we could use things. I hate throwing out plastic lids and stuff.
Jenn… Mmmmhmmm… chah!
Squid… EVIL! Glad you did that! Sorry he didn’t appreciate what you’d done for him! Pooopy head!
