Hi hi!
I’m very much like Ryan. I’ve read “When Eight Bells Toll” by Alistair MacLean, “The Daybreakers” by Louis L’Amour, and “The Door Into Summer” by Robert Heinlein over 100 times… each. Just after we first married, my wife couldn’t believe I re-read books. I got her used to the idea eventually, so now even she re-reads on occasion.
As for wearing out books, yeah… I wear them out. But I’m also looking for new/used copies of my favorite titles to buy.
And, yeah… I HAVE memorized parts of some books. And a couple dozen poems… 350+ songs… and the ENTIRE “Sleeping Beauty” Disney animated movie, word for word and song for song. One of the rewards of re-reading is an ability to let the nuances of language and relationships soak deep into your soul and boldly flavor your outlook on life and people.
It’s a wonder his copy of Cannery Row isn’t falling apart :).
He should just memorize it and recite it to himself whenever he feels down.
He’s probably pretty close already.
