My bro-in law has taken up the home brewing. He’s a “squid” (that’s a Navy person)…. (I’m envisioning his private beer label ala Brig). My nod (via this toon) goes out to him. I’ve never been on the beer side of the fence… but that’s okay.

I wanna live on a boat.
Jack… it sounds intriguing, don’t it? Living on a boat. It’s seems to me that there might be a fair amount of moisture involved… and that doesn’t react well to paper. I know you understand.
No boats for me. I’d need one the size of a frigate to hold my library.
Been there, done that. Lived on a houseboat with a pretty sizable (paperback) library. The idea is to keep the moisture outside the boat and the paper in.
At one time I wanted to live on a boat. I found the perfect one right here in Monterey. When I went to buy it, the price unexpectedly changed on me.
Then, someone I know bought it out from under me just so he could have the slip. I asked him about the boat and he told me that I didn’t really want that boat Etc…Etc…Etc… After about five or six months of me bugging him, He took the boat out into the bay one night and sank it.
That ended that.
My mate and I do a fair bit of home brewing, though we brew mead. Mead is made with water, yeast (either beer or wine yeast) and honey. Depending on which type of yeast you use it can be either beer or wine. Since we don’t really like beer we brew the wine variety.
We like brewing mead for the variety of additives and flavors you can play around with. I make a pretty mean chocolate mead, though it doesn’t get it’s full flavor till about two or three years after brewing. My mate makes an elderberry mead that is just to die for. He even won first place with it in an amateur mead competition against 13 other brews.
Heck, I even made a mushroom mead once that turned out to have a flavor more like an old English ale than a wine. Even though I don’t like beer, I actually liked it; and it was good for you. I used Rishi mushrooms, they are known as the emperor’s tonic in China. Because they are supposed to be so healthful that only the emperor could afford them.
Obviously they’ve gone down in price since then… I couldn’t have afforded them otherwise.
Wow, Squid… that sounds like a pretty dickish move on your friends part. “Hey, I got this nice boat. I’m not going to use it, but I’m not going to let you use it either”.
Yeah, it did piss me off quite a bit.
Mike… yah… I’d have that problem, too. Art books are heavy… it’s probably sink the dang thing!
Moo… that musta been cool though… livin’ on a boat. How many books did you sacrifice to mold?
Squid… Sad story! Really bad mean “friend”???? And what a waste of a good boat… sigh. Did the boat have a name?
Pasha… whoa… Mushy Mead? Weird… I do like me some honey mead. Honey anything… Good goin’ on the award winning Mate’s Mead! Ribbon or medal? Elderberry sounds nice, too. Sigh.
Actually first prize for the mead comp was a silver drinking mug, roughly of the pint size.
