It’s funny. I have been tossing around Steampunk with friends… and those I thought would know of it, didn’t… and those who I thought would be clueless were quite on board.

Randie doesn’t know what Steampunk is? Now I don’t feel so bad for not knowing what a Zine is.
I think Steampunk is when you listen to Black Flag in a sauna.
Yat… Do you go to Comic Conventions at all? In to Sci-fi? Randie’s a bit slow on the curve there. Her circles need to get a bit bigger.
Jack… ha! yah… that would be some Steamed Punking going on.
Brig: I don’t do comic conventions and my only sci-fi comes from Doctor Who, but I do enjoy an occasional dose of alternate history, which sometimes includes steampunk.
Maybe I was a bit harsh on Randie. My first comment was all I could think of at that moment.
Nemo is…a punk rocker! Nemo is…a punk rocker!
…sorry, guess that only works with Ramones fans.
Yat… no, no… she really ought to know what steampunk is… Ryan knows… so that’s part of the funny. She’s clueless because she’s not much of a reader… she doesn’t know Verne…
Dada… Yah… I guess that one flew over MY head.
Steampunk get-ups and the Jules Verne reference make me think back to 1990 (22 years ago, yikes!) and the ending of the third “Back to the Future” when Doc Brown, Clara and their kids, Jules and Verne, emerged out of their futuristic flying steam locomotive to say “hi” to Marty.
Hmmm… I think I missed that one… Back to the Future suffers from that trilogy curse… first one great… second one okay… third…. stinker. Oh well. Although, not all trilogies are accursed. Examples anyone?
there was an anime done back in the early- or mid-90’s based loosely on the works of jules verne called “nadia”. it was my first exposure to the idea of steampunk. i’ve seen mand examples since and each time the images get better and better. yeah, i kinda like steampunk myself.
btw…i think ryan would do well with the steampunk approach to halloween. i don’t know how it is where he works, but i do know a lot of employers (mine included) encourage halloween dress-ups (as long as it’s family appropriate, of course). on a similar note, did squid-man ever show you the photos he took of me dressed up as an old boat skipper?
My steampunk costume would be a pair of (round) goggles with a flip-up magnifier and a loaded tool belt. I’ve got all the elements in a closet, somewhere. (No leather jacket, tho. Too bad!)
I actually thought the second Back to the Future, where they went into the future future, was the weakest. I like the old wild west style of the third and Doc Brown’s gigantic flying steam locomotive time machine was most impressive.
