Picasso Ghost
Randie loves Pablo Picasso’s art … but dislikes the artist himself. Picasso’s ego and hyper-confidence puts him on par with Randie’s “buddy” Maximillian.
The painting Randie is referencing is La Vie from Picasso’s Blue Period. Randie is likely in her own “blue” period.
Wow… what are they putting in Randie’s coffee? 😉
He HAS kind of earned it, though. If he was still alive, I mean.
I really like Randie’s interpretation… It kind of suits her.
I also really hate pretentious, know it all artists who think that everyone should emulate them. Art is about expressing yourself even if it is influenced by the works of other artists.
Max reminds me of an artist that I had the (miss) fortune of meeting once. I was at a friends gallery and he was having a showing of a new artists work, the work was really good but seemed to have a running theme (that didn’t always seem to fit) with a particular figure in each of the paintings… then I met the artist and realized why that was…
His ego was so big that he put himself as the central figure of ALL of his paintings… whether or not they seemed to need a central figure or not. He had very much the same attitude as Max… and come to think of it much the same look… though he tended to sport the top hat and stylish duster look a lot in his clothing choice… he reminded me of a wanna-be goth vampire truth be told with his clothing style.
It wouldn’t have been so bad if he hadn’t been so overly aware of just how good he looked in the clothes… I personally don’t mind handsome guys who dress nice, but when they expect EVERYONE to acknowledge just how good they look on an hourly basis it get’s old… fast.
Although this is a family comic, I have to agree with Pablo. Randie shouldn’t be so reluctant to paint nudes as well as clothed figures. Mary Cassatt painted nude children, for crying out loud!
James… Randie wouldn’t mind doin’ up some nudes, but Harold won’t let her.
Pash… It sounds like you had your very own Maximillian. Lovely. It’s unfortunate that ego can ruin a talented artist person. It’s good you only had to meet him once, instead of living next door to him, like Randie.
Small Dave… have a look at the current top most expensive paintings ever. Picasso has more than one.
Astragali… I wonder… but this isn’t the first time she’s been visited by a dead artist.
I have seen La Vie in person. It’s at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Speaking of which, a friend and I went to the Akron Art Museum yesterday to see the M.C. Escher exhibit. We enjoyed it greatly. It’s one of only two places in the US where the exhibit is appearing. I wonder how we got so lucky…..
brig… great interpretation of La Vie.
Looked it up on google (they have a really cool title page today in honor of the first world’s fair), funny how the guy in the painting is in his undies, while the girl hanging on him…not so much. The mother type with the giant feet, wrapped in a robe, and looking on is holding a baby. That’s the figure that is Randie’s image here, but she’s holding a baby. The detail would have been too small and lost in the Sunday funny, but it would have been funny if the baby she was holding (Randie) was Harold.
Good thing for Randie’s conscience, aka Harold, nixing the nudes, Sunday paper funnies are likely viewed by more kids and church go’in conservative families than any other day. Expanding out into other papers is good, keeping your existing gig is better.
uwg… Lucky you.
I love Escher. I’ve got a couple of his pencilled optical illusions in my living room along with a couple of those old school images that have a 3D effect when you stare at them long enough…one is an old 3D-ized Grateful Dead album-promo poster.
* spoiler alert on upcoming fan-art drawing * Number too, (spelling is intentional) is of a sort of figure painting session. Max has a mirror on top of his easel and has painted himself.
brig… Still in town, Monterey, until Mom’s Day, planning on a FF visit with a fan art unload, only have found myself in need of a lightboard. Can I use yours?
Brig: But… but… Harold’s already nude…
Astra… Ha! Maybe he doesn’t like comparisons.
Yup, but he would only have been a minor annoyance to me if he had lived next door. After the brief introduction at the gallery he didn’t even acknowledge me because I was neither “Hip” enough to fit in with his crowd nor was I “Rich” enough to afford his paintings. And since I had never had a showing at my friends gallery then I couldn’t possibly be a good enough artist to even be considered competition. So more than likely he would simply have pretended that I didn’t exist and I would have been fine with that.
UWG…. wow! I had no idea that painting was in Ohio! I didn’t note where it was when I researched it. You are fortunate! Did you enjoy the painting… or were you “meh” about it?
Astragali… um… there is that.
Pash… who need’s ‘im?
Stick… Harold would’ve worked well in Randie’s painting! Darn…. oh well.
Yes, you can use my light box.
Hmmm…Makes me wonder what a discussion with Schulz and Eisner would bring about? I’d probably get along with Sparky, but me and Wil might come to blows over our tastes in design and layout.
