Parents
I had trouble with Emily’s parents… I had them being severe at first… it didn’t feel right. Em’s father was more of an “expecter” … as in “I expect my children to do well or else”… but that just isn’t where it wanted to go. So I wrote the “change” into Ryan’s email.
And I wanted Mum to be involved with the theatre somehow… as an enthusiastic theatre-goer … but this is more, um, interesting. (By the way, I am a Rickman fan… had you guessed?)
brig… I love how Em’s family members all have names that start with the letter “E.”
Are you a Lotus fan? British road and racing car company whose car names have always started with an E. (Evora, Elite, Elise, Espirit, Elan, Eclat, Europa, EAtna…) The cars have starred in a couple James Bond movies and are also being made into Tesla roadsters. Now if they could only make a race car (F1) that could win a modern-day race.

Nice job too on giving Em’s folks some flamboyance, the dad even looks like a sort of Sir Richard Branson with giant eyebrows. You gotta love a self-made, multi-bill-ee-on-air adventurer who started from humble means by mailing taped music from his folk’s basement.
Finally, by Grabthar’s hammer, Alan Rickman rocks.
Oops. Correction, Clive doesn’t start with an E. Just thought of that, it’s kinda late in the eve. Hey, maybe he’s adopted.
If this weren’t a comic, I would be violently jealous of Ryan.
mischug… Jealous? Maybe you’ve forgotten about Clive as well.
Violently.
Who said anything about Clive? Alan Rickman is one of my favorite actors. I wouldn’t kill to meet him, but I just might maim someone.
mischeg… By Grabthar’s Hammer…Alan Rickman:

Alan of Notthingham, anyone?
OK, one last one, yippie ki yay mother Alan…

Incidently, liked him loads in Dogma, too.
Ha, you should have been at Wondercon! I did a few original watercolors of the Potter characters. Snape looked something like this:

s-f, maybe live is his middle name.
Nice one, Crow
Brig,
It’s snowing here in Minnesota. I miss California!
What’s the weather like out there now?
Alan Rickman is excellent 🙂 My turn to submit a link, now – and this is of actor John Sessions on the BBC show QI, turning in a wonderful impersonation of Alan, including an anecdote or two about the great man 🙂
I can see that many of my Squiddies are Rackman, I mean Rickman fans. By Grabthar’s hammer, I’d maim someone, as well! … just slightly… Mischug… wanna duke it out?
Galaxy Quest is definitely Bridgett top 10 bestest… Rickman’s role in Dogma was incredible. I think that was the film that clinched my everlasting devotion… (I fast forward thru the rest of the film just to get to his scenes). The Potter films don’t feature Snape enough, but I dig them. Sense & Sensibility was a very good film. Snow Cake… superb.
Stick… I’d named Emily first… then in my quest to find “British sounding names” landed on Edwin first… then I liked the idea of another “E” name to go with Edwin so it could be “THE Edwin & “E-name Shufflebottom Wing” at the Museum… Sooooo I liked the idea of Ed & Ed… for short… Edwin, Edith (Edie) and Emily. My thoughts were to make Clive the black sheep of the family… his clothing is looking a little, um… dirty. (fun links to Mr. Rickman, as well, Stick).
Totally unrelated note… If you are a new “Saw you at Stumptown, Portland” Reader… WELCOME TO SQUID ROW! Have fun lookin’ around!
Crow… Your Snape is lovely. Really lovely. I would’ve been to WonderCon except… my sister’s Sandy Eggo bridal shower trumps Wonder. Next year…
Astragali… yah! that’s a good clip! The bit at the end was super good.
Joe… it’s threatening rain (tomorrow for sure) … and you’ll need a light coat or sweater. You, however… snow shovels expected. My condolences.
Another lover of Rickman, here. We’ve enjoyed him as good guy or bad – or “up in the air” ala Snape – in all his movies. As much as we loved him in Galaxy Quest, I’m going to quote this one instead: “Some men are born in the wrong century. I think I was born on the wrong continent. Oh, by the way, you’re fired ”
I like Em’s parents. And it’s very easy to see how they’ve affected Em in her own views. I’m going to be interested in hearing their opinions about their son.
OKAY!! I yield to the pressure!
“By Grabthar’s Hammer………….oh, what a savings.”
Pete: Somehow I knew you would be, Pete.
Okay… name that film, ya’ll…. no cheating!
(I cheated because…) That’s one Rickman film I didn’t see… NETFLEX… help me!
I’m liking Em’s parents, too… much more than the way I was gonna write/draw them.
“Alex, where are you going?” “To see if there’s a pub!”
The Rickman love overflows.
Pete… I cheated, looked up that quote too (brig), did see that movie, great villain role.
brig… Nice quote. I see you added a level of difficulty…quotes of 2 folks, not just Alan.
Wow, the gray haired ones have a bit of fiskiness in ’em. So, is Edie’s ‘having TEA every second Thursday’ just that, or is it rather code for something a bit more nefarious?
Eh… you know those Actor/actress types… (notice Clive isn’t like the others… hmmm, might lead some to wonder). I’m gonna say that tea is just tea.
Though I’ve not seen all of Rickman’s works, the worst use of his inestimable talent was in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – the book had a brilliant scene where Alan could have shone as Snape, but in the film adaptation, the script makes him come off as a whiny puppy.
I’ve not seen Half-Blood Prince, or Deathly Hallows Part One, but knowing what’s in the books, I hope the screenwriters didn’t let Rickman down. (There, I think that avoided spoilers.)
I think there are a lot of women out there who are AR fans-ya know. The guy just oozes typical British sex appeal while being a damn good actor. My favorite was in the Die Hard movie where he was yanked out the window. What a villain!
I’m surprised that no one has mentioned Alan Rickman’s role as Ed the Painter in the 1989 thriller ‘The January Man’. In a supporting role he plays an artist in a slump and friend of the hero (Kevin Kline). Ed helps in the hunt for a serial killer. Alan Rickman playing a painter, I thought that would be a natural for this theme. Here’s a quote: “I’m going to go home, mix some paint, and try to create something original.”
GAH! Unca Bad… Rickman as an artist! There’s another one I missed! Of course! Netflix isn’t going to help on “The January Man”…
Ruth… yah, they totally biffed it by killing off Hans. No way to get that one back… I do think Jeremy Irons does make a dashing bad guy though. Anyone see his impersonation of Rickman playing Snape? Soooo goood.
As much fun as Galaxy Quest was, that’s actually one of my least favorite roles for him. I think it was his role in Sense and Sensibility that made me fall in love with his acting. And his voice! *melts*
