Welcome to the Crown & Cannon, Squish’s new place of employment.
There are quite a few British pubs in Monterey… which always confounded me. The British never had a foothold here. No matter. here’s a list.
The Mucky Duck, The Crown & Anchor, Duffy’s, The British Bulldog, Britannia Arms, The London Bridge Pub.
English Ales & Pub in Marina… and what was the Penny Farthing in Salinas.
Actually, I’ve known a number of ex-Brits who settled on the Peninsula. One of my best friends in first grade was fresh off the boat from Scotland (close enough), and I hear he still lives in Carmel. I’ve met or worked with several English people over the years. Their numbers are fairly small compared to the local Italian population, but they do exist.
My ex-boss who retired nearly two years ago was from Canada, althoguh he was born in London. He always used to joke (as unlikely as that is for a Brit) that he had a stool in the Pennyfarthing with his name on it…
You can find british pubs frigging everywhere! I tripped over half a dozen in Africa, a shocking number stashed in corners in italy, and frequented at least two in germany (I’m not sure if the third one was a british pub or just owned by a homesick brit, but you could get great whiskey there). And that’s just fine with me. I like my rotgut foul, strong, and able to polish brass.
I also encountered a british pub in china once (I’ve made three VERY brief trips through the southwest regions), but I’m not sure it was real so much as a hallucination. It was just big enough for maybe a dozen customers and the guy behind the counter was some kind of magic liquor fairy, I swear! His stock of booze was jaw-dropping but I’ve never been able to find the little alley I located it in again. Le sad.
Also, Squish is starting to look like her teeth are fused together. I find that hilarious. Maybe it’s just me.
At first I thought “wait, you missed the Bully in Carmel!”. Then I discovered that Yelp reports it as closed. 🙁 When did it close? I have lots of old memories of that place.
Cutting down to M-W-F, huh, Brig? I’m looking forward to seeing/buying the cool stuff that comes from the extra time! 😀
Jim… so the Brits are lurking around the Peninsula… eh? The fella who owns the London Bridge Pub has a lovely British accent… so there’s ONE Brit I know of.
Rich… then he might be sad that the Farthing changed it’s name and it’s seating.
Lady Jenn…. I wish I had a magic liquor fairy. So instead of a wand, does he/she carry a mottler?
fused teeth? hmmm….
JC… I’d forgotten about that one… wasn’t it something else before that? Sherlock Holmes pub?
Pete… it couldn’t be helped. If I want to grow the comic… something had to give. Ironically, it meant cutting back… BUT … already I have finished the first book (the compilation from 2012-13) with some fun extras. The graphic novel will be in the works soon! It will take a lot longer though.
Sherlock Holmes Pub was in the Barnyard for a long time. We used to go there a lot in the ’90s, but it went downhill and we stopped.
If memory serves the Bully III (its full name) was part of the Adobe Inn in Carmel. It closed a long time ago. I’m not sure what’s in that space now. Wasn’t that the space where Fresh Cream ended up before going belly up?
Must be nice having someone that’s glad to see you.
Ties rawk. But what’s up with the black skinny tie? Is that a retired member from The Knack?
Squish just gets cuter; that second panel is priceless. She looks much hotter in drag than in tiki gear. ; )
Brig,
No, no. I understand completely. Been there, done that. Much as I loved writing “Celeste the Pirate” web comic, I had to give my novel writing priority, so it went on hiatus after a 100 or so pages. I may start it up again some day, but ya gotta keep priorities.
My liquor fairy seemed to carry bottles and a carnation, actually…..
