Has Randie even seen a picture of Emily?
One date, does not a girlfriend make. I should know. ;^(
“That evening, with her blinds pulled, Mary had three helpings of corn, two baked potatoes, extra bread, and a little lamb.”
Thank you, Gary Larson, for providing Randie with a delicious and nutritious way out of this predicament…. anyone have some mint sauce?
And poor Randie. There’s nothing quite as upsetting as unrequited love turning into lost love.
“Unrequited”?
I think Randie had been taking Ryan for granted for a long time. I don’t think we’ve seen Randie display much open affection for him. They may as well have been brother and sister.
Joe: The thing is, there’s a lot we don’t see – between the strips, as it were – and as we’ve seen, there’s a lot that the two of them don’t see, either.
Example: There’s a young lady at work who is (in no particular order) intelligent, attractive, funny, fun to be around, and incredibly sarcastic. We’re friends, we pick on each other (a LOT) in fun, but I’d love for it to be more than that – and goodness knows I’ve hinted often enough. Sigh.
Pete: Ha! It’s time for Sarcastic and mean Lambies on a stick! Skewer them puppies! (not puppies, mind you… lamb… which I actually like. It’s tastey meat I feel guilty for eating… same with duck… I love duckies!)
Joe… your comments have brought “the situation” to my attention. In the olde days of Squid, I showed Ryan and Randie doing more together… and I have showed this less often in the strip nowadays. I wish to convey that they have a tight friendship that isn’t solely based on Rye’s generosity but on their appreciation of one another, etc. So…I have written a few strips in the line-up to illustrate this more. I am, as always, thankful for the feedback. Sometimes you get too close to your work that you don’t always see it. (That’s nearsided-ness, right?)
Astragali… hang in there… just be your smiling, happy self. Toss in a light-hearted wink every now and again. (But not a creepy, “hey baby, hey baby” sort of wink!)
Brig,
It’s easy to get in a rut. The current story arc will go a long way to help define the relationship between Randie and Ryan.
“Questionable Content” has a lot of dialogue about relationships between the characters. These can get quite graphic and is intended for 14+. They are closing on 1800 strips so it will take a while to go through the archives. These characters have a lot of hangups and personal growth.

I don’t think Squid Row needs to copy them, just that some kind of emotional scene between Randie and Ryan to show that there is some smoke going on there.
Joe: Actually, considering the nature of Jeph’s QC strips, I’d have said 17+… The language in itself makes it R-rated, not PG.
Astragali: I agree that the language can get pretty strong, but there are movies rated PG-13 that make you wonder if the ratings board was asleep. I’ve seen comments by Jeph that the strip is intended for 14+. That being said, I would up that to 16+. I don’t expect the themes in that strip to be covered here. Some would be way out of character for the cast of Squid Row.
I’m going to stop making suggestions and let Brig decide where it goes from here. She’s done a great job with it and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
