No Mo
Today is an interesting day in the cartooning world. Today’s toon is tongue in cheek.

AWESOME! Fantastic job! I love it!
I see. ^^
Oh noes! Does this mean that SQUID ROW is going to go on a long, long hiatus, following the mysterious disappearance of its brilliant but high risk-taking creator??
Controversal topic, this. It says in the Koran (apparently, I haven’t read it) that it’s forbidden to create representations of Mohammed. Not terribly surprised that people can get angry about it.
Religion is odd to me, though. So far, I’m agnostic, despite (because of?) graduating from a Catholic high school. I do need to read the Bible through some day. Maybe I can take a comparative religion course for credit somewhere…
Really, all we have to do is pick something common and start a campaign to have that thing be considered a depiction of Mo. A cow seems reasonable: pictures of cows are everywhere. So every time you see a picture of a cow you declare that it is the image of Mo. After a while if you say it enough, it becomes true. Ask any political party. The wackos will have to put a hit out on virtually everyone including themselves for having a jug of moo in the fridge.

Thanks for your contribution. Glad I don’t run Facebook. I went over there, it is a laff-riot. Best to go to the “last” or early pictures (7500 and counting), the gibbering spammers have cluttered the most recent posts.
Poor Molly, (yes, I eventually found her posting there) astounded by her success, dismayed by her success.
William,
It also days in the Old Testament that people shouldn’t eat pork…but you don’t see bacon processing plants being fire bombed. The rules of any particular religion seem to be aimed at the adherents to that religion…not the whole durn world!
Redtaildd…Happy Mo’s come from California!
…says, darnit, It says in the…
I am not a confrontational person. I very much dislike “raised voices,” waving fists and throwing rocks. If we can diffuse such things with humor, which is a powerful tool, maybe we can understand each other better.
Alas, the Drawing Mo Day… I fear it is a middle finger to antagonists and it will throw more gasoline on the fire. It will become a horrible circle. It’s “I will disrespect you because you disrespect me… and I will fire bomb you… and you will do likewise.”
I’m guessing Molly was threatened somehow, and this caused her to retreat. In a way, I don’t blame her. Cartooning is a powerful medium… and for the most part we cartoonists mean no harm… we just want to laugh at something and we ask the world to laugh with us.
Let the record reflect that I support “niceness”… but it has to be across the board.
I also like pork.
William McD: According to Wikipedia, “The Qur’an does not explicitly forbid images of Muhammad, but there are a few hadith (supplemental traditions) which have explicitly prohibited Muslims from creating the visual depictions of figures under any circumstances.” (my emphasis) Incidentally, it’s worth reading more of that Wikipedia article, especially the bit where it mentions other religions (including Christianity) don’t (or didn’t) allow representations of saints and prophets, even today…
Pete: It can be a risky business, drawing cab drivers 😉
Let me just add… that the cartoonists that drew Mo originally, the Dutch fellas, should not have to fear for their lives. That’s just wrong.
mmm…. bacon.
Astragali & Jude: See, this is why I’m agnostic. Who gets to decide these things?
Personally, no, I don’t think the Dutch cartoonists should be killed. Smacked upside the head for stirring up trouble, perhaps. I would be more comfortable if it was a Islamic cartoonist making a point like this.
So, this pretty much nixes your chances of getting a show on Comedy Central….. 😉
This is great Brig! I always love opposition to censorship :D.
I urge niceness for everyone as well <3! Humour and art help us to understand each other better, and when you understand where someone is coming from, you can't be mad anymore.
I like pork too, but aside from bacon, it upsets my stomach so I can't eat it.
Niceness rocks!
