Model Cat
Still life with cat… an oxymoron… yes? Always work from photos when you wish to paint cats… UNLESS there is a bright ray of sunshine in their midst. There’s also the small problem of cats knowing when they’re being photographed, or about to… they dodge the shutterbugs, too.
The ONLY decent sketch I’ve done in my life was of our cat, Eliot. I was lying on the floor, proofreading my novel, when he came up and laid down beside me, head up and eyes almost closed. Since I had an editing pencil in my hand, I quickly sketched out his profile and added some details. I actually got the proportions right and it really LOOKED like Eliot. Woot!
Pete… that’s charming. I can tell that you really loved your cat. Smiles. I have a lot of really quick sketches of MOuse… but whether they look like her or not…
You want a cat to sit still? Here’s the answer: start reading a book. They’ll come, sit on the pages, and refuse to budge!
It’s true, Dada… book, newspaper, art project, whatever…
My girlfriend (Megan): I have a cat, but you’ll never see him, he hates people.
Khattt: *Flop* Purrrrr *Waves paws in the air*
Megan: ….
Khatt’s favorite perch is on top of whatever chair I am sitting on, one big double paw on top of my head to say ‘mine’, and purring.
Sixteen pounds of Maine Coon cat… I have seen him run away from people, but for some reason he has decided that I belong to him… I have also seen him being chased around her apartment by a cat that weighs maybe half as much – he doesn’t hate people, he is just a big scaredy cat.
And he has the littlest, tiniest mew…. š
