Mix Tape
This toon was inspired by a graphic novel I picked up at a convention recently. It’s called Side B and has all these short stories revolving around… you guessed it…. the mix tape. I think those of us old enough to have had these little bits of old technology have some story or fond memory about them.
along with my immense record collection, i have an innumerable amount of cassettes i’ve recorded back in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
the memories surrounding the contents of said tapes makes me wax just as nostalgic as the mixtape did for ryan…
p.s….i wouldn’t trade such nostalgia for the world.
I have a bunch of mix CDs I made of random songs from my CD collection. No labels at all. Just “Mix 1”, “British 2”, “Rock 1” or whatever written on them. I used to have most of my CDs on my computer, but that several hard drives ago and before MP3 made it so easy.
BTW: Lost power here less than three hours ago. Now, it’s back! Yeah! I can go to sleep now.
All of my mix tapes from high school were compilations of Dr. Demento I recorded off the radio. 😀
Trying to find time to get all my old cassettes recorded to disc before discs become obsolete too.
Greywolf,
We’ve got about a dozen of those at my house! The Dr. rocks! He was my first operational instruction of the word “irony”.
When I was in England(1985-1986) I recorded audio from LAZER 558. It, and Radio Caroline were two AM Pirate radio ships in the North Sea. They broadcast better music than the BBC and they were unlicensed.
Ha! This is great. My Jr. year’s playlist still holds true to today. 80’s metal. Dio, Megadeth, Ozzy, AC/DC….good times. Still are.
It’s funny how we associate music with periods in our lives. The summer I discovered The Beatles is a memorable one… between Frosh & Sophomore year in high school.
Jack… you metal head. I lost hearing in my left ear at a Ratt Poison concert. My best friend had 11th row seats at Irvine Meadows.
Jude & Grey… I LOVE Dr. Demento…. and also have some “off the radio tapes” … notably the 1991 Halloween show… that one is Precious and I listen to it once a year… at Halloween.
Firedome… Did you hear about the new record place in Monterey? Siren Records?
Joe… I saw the movie about the British Pirate Radio… I think it was called Pirate Radio. So have you been enjoying the Olympic music?
Brig,
Spice Girls and George Michael? Not my thang.
Sigh…mix tapes. Of course for those of us whose musical tastes have changed radically over the years these can sometimes be sources of embarrassment. Just make sure you keep them secretly and safely tucked away, along with your old journals/sketchbooks!
I’m not sure if in the next panel Ryan would break into song, tears or both.
Ah…yup, do recall mix tapes, even early ones trying to preserve favorite songs that would play on the radio. The tape recorder had a radio built in, and it was a test to catch as much of the song start as possible and then hope that they’d play it through to the end. Remember the time lag between pushing “record” on a tape deck and having it actually start recording?
Dada… Safely tucked away like Ryan’s Randie journal? It’d be funny if Twink would dig it up and Randie’d take it away from the little fuzzball only to then read it.
brig… Are there any singers ambling about in Cypress City’s art community? Ryan could wax poetic and have his lyrics put to song. It could be a whole new jealousy excercise for Randall, well, until she gets a concert poster and t-shirt gig out of it.
@Dada
Embarrassed of Dr Demento? NEVAR! 😀
However, that being said, I lost the tapes long ago, back during the tumultuous on-again off-again relationship that resulted in my first marriage. During one of our repeated breakups, she made a raid on my storage locker (this was back when I was in the Navy) and one of the things that vanished was all my cassettes. Ah well.
I’ve been putting all of my old mix tapes onto c.d.
Joe… well, night mine either… but they DID have FatBoy Slim. But you know, where was Elton John in all this? How can you have The Spice Girls and not Elton? Sheesh. I was happy to see the Bee Gees shout out.
Dada… I suppose. I look at some music as a phase. Like I went thru a reggae phase, a Beach Boy phase, a Boston phase… I still like some of that music… but I don’t go out of my way to listen to them anymore.
Gah, stick… sometimes I swear you are spying on me. Later this week, you’ll find the friday-sat toons interesting.
… I went thru a period where I was discovering the Beatles… and one of the radio stations in LA or Sandy Eggo did a Beatles Sunday show, and I would record them. It’s a nice way to be introduced to new (old, in this case) music.
Grey… Condolences.
Squid… I wouldn’t mind doing that… My 1991 Halloween Dr. Demento needs preservation!!!!
Dr. Demento was one of my heroes in Junior High! I actually got to meet him at a convention in 2004. Nice guy!
