Miles Away
There’s nothing so dismal as feeling remote and far away from someone…. especially when you want to be close to that someone.

uh oh, maybe trouble in paradise? On the flip side…oh my, I can see myself in Emily..growing up I always had a book in my face. I use to ride the bus and read on the way home from school…until one day I forgot to pay attention to the route and ended up missing my house! Had to ride all the way to the end of the bus route and then back to my house, my parents weren’t too pleased, but Garfield books were very captivating to a third grader! 🙂
Joe… Yah…. jus’ like that… except her eyes are brown.
Heather… Garfield captivated me, too- when I was a wee Bridgett. However, Em’s reading material is more at the PHD reading level. (Personally, I prefer the toon books, myself).
Maybe this is the start of Randie and Ryan realizing the rightness of a romantic relationship…good lord, look at all the alliteration! Anyway…really, I’ve wanted Randie to take her nose out of the pigment tube and see Ryan for…oh, for EVER now.
Rye and Em are definitely on a different page.
Back in Cypressburg, to small to really be called a city, Rye was amused by a yammering blonde haired muse to whom he never showed his writings. Not so much now in jolly ‘ol London. What the Shufflebottom family adoption needs is some sort of yelping inspiration that won’t take his writings personally and yet is messy apartment suited.
Rescue dog anyone? Don’t know who would be rescued more, the dog or the Ryan.
On PhD and Garfield books…
Organized and ordered minds are differently creative, innovative and fun minds.
Elemental: I love alliteration! London’s calling leaves lost travelers lingering and longing.
Stick… Cypress City has many fine qualities… cypress trees, a gorgeous coastline, a touristy vibe, and a not-starving-at-the-moment artist who’s being missed. A rescue dog would have to swim a long ways to get to Rye Bread.
hi, brig…
I am not discounting the many fine tourist draws and local boasts of Cypress City. I just imagine its relative size as falling somewhere in between a small village and a large city. Hopefully the place doesn’t suffer from a size-deficiency-based inferiority complex.
The blonde, yammering, rescue pup, literal inspiration (wow, talk about alliteration), would need to be of a local London vintage for obvious cross-country roaming and cross-ocean traversing limitations. Plus Em might take a new found interest in Rye via his little puppy friend. As for Clive, he’d just like the dog with Rye attached or not. Man’s best friend, non?
…cheerios, pete
Seems like you’re going to explore the whole notion of whether or not Ryan and Randie can continue to be close friends while ignoring/avoiding the obvious growing bond between them. In my long observation of us human types, I find those Harry-Sally relationships seldom continue. Sex inevitably complicates the equation, regardless of other factors.
Now Ryan is in London with his lovely, rich, brainy Emily, but obviously doesn’t have the companionship he enjoys with Randie. Timing’s not good for any of them–unless it’s to show Rye that it takes more than chemistry to bake a cake.
Ryan, in so many situations, sat right next to Randie while she sketched and drew and he read. It was comfortable…. so many easy friendships are. Ryan, in his relationship with Em, wants her attentions, knowing that her focus is on school. This toon shows that perhaps what they want, or think they want, isn’t what’s gotten.
And where the heck are his notebooks? Dude!
brig… I got a feeling that you may not have understood my dog idea. The rescue dog I mentioned would not be the St. Bernard type that helps dig out unsuccessful avalanche surfers. Rather the rescue dog I was trying to describe is the kind that is rescued itself from abuse, abandonment, or a whole host of sad events and then is put into a good home with a person (Rye) or persons that will care for the dog and help make up for its trying earlier years. It would not be a dog doing rescuing as much as a dog being rescued. And therefore a metaphor for Ryan himself. Plus dogs always seem to attract others’ attention…a bonus.
