Midge, Mouse, and Marty

Backstreet Comics has a new owner, Martin Walter Scott… or simply, Marty. Comic nerds may find Marty slightly familiar, as I borrowed (with permission) a likeness from a fellow cartoonist that I had the pleasure of meeting and have become friends with. A hint as to whom this is lies in Marty’s full name. Another hint would be that Marty would be a “Deathpool” fan. Give up? I’ll divulge the answer in the comments.
This comic was a bit of an experiment in a 9 panel story. I’m not sure if the first go around was successful… it took a LONG time to complete so I may not visit 9 panels as often. Thoughts?
I like the “Tintin” rocket sitting on the shelf in the background…
Is that a Zap comix shirt Marty is wearing? Old school, Robert Crumb, underground kinda comic guy is he?
Marty is well read… Euro comics is within his sphere.
I think you will see that the NEW Backstreet Comics will be a special place with nods to all everything in comix.
It’s Midge! My secret crush!
Mouse looks less mouse-y; I like that.
Nine panels is a lot, even for a Sunday strip. What about six panels?
Yat…. Aw, then you’ll be happy to see more of her coming up. 6 panels is much more doable. Yes.
Gabe and Rat could form the Legion of Loser Boyfriends (that’s not quite the same as the Scott Pilgrim thing, right?).
Dada… Yes, that would be a stellar Legion… of doh-doh-head boyfriends. They would function much like Scapula’s band of loser villains back in the day.
That reminds me of Dexter’s Lab with the guitar wielding Norse guy… Rat could be the equivalent, with less hair and low-self esteem.
Man, why do good women end up with lousy guys? And defend them? i admit sometimes it’s a perspective thing (sometimes there’s a great guy there but people only see the negatives). Other times….. why is this person being defended?! Also nine panels gives lots of room for story, but I imagine it’s a heck of a long workload. I’d save that for dramatic, exposition heavy times, if you end up with any. As usual, my advice: do what’s good for you to work with. I hate to see good cartoonists end up suffering from ‘expectation whiplash’ and burn out!
Trev… Yes, for a short time (thankfully), I was with one of those “lousy guys”… it was my first real relationship and I was most unexperienced. But I learned, very quickly, that “that sort of person” was one you just must pass on. I suppose that I am writing from experience.
Yes, you can tell more story in a 9 panel. But I think what I must do with the length is do less in the background and be more clever with the figures, if I wish to do that many panels. Thanks for the feedback.
Still waitin’ on that reveal, Brig.
Oh, and Mouse is growing up! Great look for him. Fond of Midge’s goggles, too!
I’m glad that you like the new looks for Mouse and Midge. I must say, Steampunk goggles is cool! Wink-wink. And you are right… it is time to pull the rabbit out of Midge’s new hat. I don’t know if that makes sense, but I like it. Revealing in the next comment.
Here is Marty Walter Scott… I mean, Scott Koblish.

@Fun Mike – I’ve still got most of the original Zap comics in a box. Somewhere…
Mouse should know better than taking the name of Spock in vain!
Rich… if you ever wanted to sell them, I’m sure there is a definite market for them. E-bay would be abuzz for your Zaps.
Jon… well, I guess that puts a “I’M SO SERIOUS” on the statement, don’t it?
