Martha Pie
So who makes “the goods” in your family? Is there something everybody loves because it is REALLY good! Judy makes cookies… Oatmeal Everythings, Snickerdoodles… and she makes fruitcake and rum balls… oh, these are coveted.

My sister has chef qualifications. My favourite thing she’s ever made for me…well, she made my sister’s wedding cake, see, and after working for days in preparing the cake and the fondant, she and my older sister spent HOURS putting pink and black M&Ms around the bottom of each layer. She sword she’d never do M&Ms with a cake again.
But she did. For my birthday. (Just one layer mind, but I was touched.) And her cake is so sweet and tasty… :9
No, no Randie – best of both worlds. Take the sixty bucks, use $20 to bribe Aunt Martha out of another pie, have the rest to cover coffee money for the next week! 🙂
It’s me! I AM THAT PERSON. COWER IN HUMILITY, MORTALS!
gooey sauce?
I…uh… you know, the best pumpkin pie in the world probably only tastes 15%, maybe 20% better than a store bought one. Take the $60, buy yourself 2 from Safeway, and then go to a expensive dinner or something.
C’mon, Mouse! Cut out the middleman and go straight to the source with less money!
For sixty a pop, she could help him score pies…but she better not sample her own wares…
Bethlynne, myself, and all four of boys (still at home; the oldest is married and moved out) can cook. Bethlynne normally does the Thanksgiving dinner, though. Over the years, raising five sons, we’ve got it down to the bare necessities: Turkey, stuffing, mashed taters, and gravy. Dessert is normally pie.
And, as you know Brig, I make the fruitcake. I am also about the only one who eats it.
What kind of gooey sauce? My topping of choice is whipped cream.
It was my Grandmother, now it’s my older daughter. She could barely boil water when she graduated High School, but she’s a wonderful cook now. Of course, two growing boys tend to sharpen your cooking skills. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
McDuff… wow… m&n’s …. Randie would be so jealous! Should she ever get married, I think she’d call your sister!
Grey… but it’s PIE… not out-of-a-box pie… (how often does Randie get THAT)… PIE.
Sm Dave… you mean YOU ARE the pie-man?
Anatman… yes, gooey sauce… bum, bum bum.
Legacy… you and Grey Wolf don’t understand… it’s GOOD pie! GOOOOOOD pie.
Joeseph…. well, apparently Aunt Martha doles out these pies with some particular-ness. She probably only has so many and figures a few for Turkey Day and let ’em fight for the leftovers… it could be a fun sporting event to enjoy instead of the football.
R.New…. I dunno… although 60 smackers is a goodly amount of money… it has to be worth it…. keep the pie and leave what’s behind door number two there. Hey! It’s Pie or No Pie, with your host Monty Hall!
Pete… No sweet potatoes? That’s all important at my Turkey Feast…. along with some sort of roll…. and pie. Pie PIE!
Yat… It is a family secret… but it’s white.
Guairdean… (hello there!) … it’s good to have a cooker person in the family… especially one who can boil water, and make tasty treats…. Oh, yes… she must do the pies at your feast… yes?
My gram made fudge at Christmas …and Buckeye Balls. We always looked forward to getting her Christmas box so we could get sick on said treats!
Of course when Aunt Martha gives you EVERYTHING with gooey sauce it’s time to be concerned (sweaters, cards, money you lend her)…
fruitcakes…mmm…i don’t know why everyone insists on bad-mouthing fruitcakes. i’ve eaten many different fruitcakes, both home made and store-bought and really haven’t had a bad one. some were a bit dry or over-flavored, but all-in-all, i rather enjoy them.
Dada… remember the ooey-gooey cookies? When it comes to cookies and pie sauce… gooey is good.
firedome… I am so with you! I love fruitcake and everything that goes in them! dried fruits nuts, booze… so in my book… fruitcake don’t deserve boos….
Wow… Poignant pie passion prevails.
If it wasn’t for my sister inviting me for dinner, Thanksgiving’s feast (and several day’s worth later) would be a Costco rotisserie chicken, instant stove-top stuffing, reheated frozen mixed veggies, and canned cranberry sauce. I can figure out the gravy on my own.
Not a lot of fancy cooking in my family, but we get by.
PS: No sweet potatoes. You can have my share.
Brig: hence the part about getting another pie, and still having the cash 😉
