Manager
I’m amazed at how people balk at return policies… and how people think they can get around it by going to a manager… nothing made me more mad than this little scenario tooned here. Art imitating life here.

I was part owner of a game store here in Maryland for a while. We used to have a regular scammer come in, browse around for a while, and then appear at the counter with a pile of stuff that he claimed his wife had bought there a short time before that he wished to return for the cash. When asked for the receipt, he’d mumble something about how his wife, who was across the street at the mall, had it, and that he’d go get it. He’d leave the pile of books on the counter, and not return for several weeks, when he’d try the same scam again on a different person at the register.
Wow…the only time I ask for a manager is when I feel that the associate is being rude and unhelpful (which Randie is certainly not), not when I don’t agree with a return policy…she should be happy she can even exchange it! Some places don’t let you have ANYTHING without a receipt.
I do sometimes ask for a manager, simply because quite a few employees these days don’t seem to know anything about what goes on in the store in which they work; or because a clerk gets snippy or is overwhelmed; or because I have a legitimate question which needs direction to someone with more authority (“What do you mean, those are $14.99 each? The sign says two for $19.99!”) This goes treble for online purchases. Of course Randie isn’t being rude, but the customer isn’t really being rude, either–just assertive. For the record, I’ve been on both sides of the counter.
In this situation, the customer should be politely (or otherwise) reminded that the returns policy is set by the manager.
I deal with this type of thing quite often.
I can relate to Randy on this one.
Whenever a customer tries to get what he or she wants by going over a clerks head, that’s when the customer needs to be bonked on the head.
