Louvre
The first time I went to The Louvre was overwhelming… the masterpieces (that for most of my life had only been seen in books) were stacked one atop the other on the high walls of the Palace. There was so much to take in that I was on visual overload… I wound up just photographing a painting and then moving onto the Next Masterpiece. It was crowded and I didn’t feel I could really sit and enjoy a work of art.
… and The Mona Lisa is entirely overrated.
I had the same reaction to the Sistine Chapel, I couldn’t stop gaping. There are curtains painted on the walls that are SO REALISTIC that even two inches away you can’t tell for sure if those folds are real or not.
Randie needs to be on the lookout for Arthur, Franz and Odile. Although I don’t know how they’re gonna race through the Louvre in the middle of that crowd.
Randie finally made it to Paris! 😀
I so feel you on the Mona Lisa. Everybody makes it out to be this huge painting…but it’s rather small when you see it for real. I wish that I could be there right now. Would take a couple of days at least to see everything there!
Chug… Sistine chapel is on the list of must-see art works… I bet it was amazing… Since the cleaning some years back.
Yat… The crowds are pretty substantial… I don’t think it’s a good idea to try to find anyone there… I had a map and I still got lost!
Dave… In her dreams!
Sarah… Mona… So underwhelmed for serious! I must confess that Da Vinci’s paintings don’t do much fer me. I do like his sketches much more better. Funny tidbit: Mona Lisa wasn’t popular until it was stolen… In fact Picasso was a suspect. It remained lost for a couple of years… Until the idiot tried to take it to Italy.
You can thank Napoleon for the great Italian art collection in the Louvre. When he conquered Italy for the French Rrepublic, in the 1790s, he looted it of everything he could get his hands on that was of any worth.
It’s like that Simpsons’ ‘Treehouse of Horror’ where Homer ended up in the “real world”!
Michael… Dang Napoleon! Conquest here, conquest there… Nab art here, nab art there.
Dada…. Randie DOES have a vivid imagination!
