Because he knows Midge knows the business, and parents will (unfortunately) feel more comfortable with a woman (right or wrong) working at a hangout place where their kids are. So if she’s uncomfortable and leaves he’ll have to find someone else, train them, hopefully geek them out, and see if they can get along with wee ones. Although she might mention to invest in some waterless hand-washing gel (even the library has the little bottles everywhere)
A raise? I have never had one of those, I’d do it just for the novelty! Seriously though, good boss. Pay people for their time and discomfort if they’re worth it!
Trev… I had a few REALLY good bosses in my time. When I was new to the art-retail business (at Aaron Bros before they were bought out by Michael’s), I had a couple of bosses that were most patient with me in my new role as asst. manager. I made some good foul-ups… but they were supportive and did NOT react as I thought they would/should. I’ve never forgotten that… obviously.
