Back in the late 70s and early 80s, I worked for a newspaper publishing company as lead driver. (I held two jobs while going to college, my Disneyland job being the other.) I was paid on salary, which was fine, since I normally worked only 30 hours a week for a 40-hour paycheck. If a week came when I worked over 40 hours, I wasn’t paid extra, but that was no problem; the situation overall was to my benefit.
Then came the Week Of I-Wish-This-Week-Would-End!! We had rain, fog, drivers calling out, presses breaking down… it was a nightmare. I worked 70 hours that week. The other lead driver worked 72. But it was a once in a jobtime occurance and we just worked through it and didn’t expect anything extra.
Our boss calls us in after the week-that-shouldn’t-have-been and says, “Good job” to us. Had he left it at that, it would have been fine. But then he ruined it by saying, “I’m putting you both in for an hour of overtime as a bonus.”
An hour! An extra $4.65. I suppose I should have been grateful for the almost-five-bucks-before-taxes bonus, but it seemed like a nickel tip. I took the hint and gave my two weeks notice a short time later. (As lead driver; I stayed on as a normal driver.)
EofO… Ha! Occupy ArtBox! Hee hee. But only if there was a coffee fairy delivering coffee (that’d be Ryan).
Squidman… That’s right! Down with UAPs!
Pete… oh… that’s not a nice story. It sounds like yer one of those people that runs on few sleeping hours. (I gatta have 8 uninterrupted hours or I’m a crank!) I imagine you were just a little cranky during all that!? Well, at least you got a good story out of it, yes? Level 4 fun.
Hey, she did offer up a complement before starting her laundry list of chores. To be fair to Carol, she does have quite a bit of paperwork to deal with, and paperwork can be very draining. Plus, she’s in for a big surprise when she discovers Grace’s sketchbook order goof.
brig… I don’t think I’ve ever seen Carol before but am taken aback by how much her nose and lipstick make her look like Spill. Is this a family resemblance, as in Carol being Spill’s mom?
I also dropped by Art Max in Seaside/Sand City today and got to thinking, with you having lived in the area previously and all. Is your Art Box patterned after Art Max, in name at least?
In Lois McMaster Bujold’s science fiction novels of the Vorkosigan series, the main character, Miles Vorkosigan, often has cause to refelct that the reward for a job well done is a harder job.
Spill’s family is more laid back than Carol… sorry, no relation despite the nose being similar.
And I have been asked about ArtMax before… my answer? I didn’t base any particular character on anyone employed there… The whole art supply thing is a compilation of my experiences having worked at two art supply stores. It’s been awhile, but the name thing… I don’t recall basing it on ArtMax. Might’ve though.
Okay, I wanna see some justice. Time to OCCUPY the art store!
I actually prefer Grace to Carol.
GAH!!!, This particular comic looks absolutely all too familiar!!
Down with underapreciative managers!
*grrr* The memories…

Stick,
When she appears, Carol is generally seen hidden by a cloud of black cigarette smoke. She must smoke something worse than Gauloises.
She’s probably one of Spill’s relatives as you say; one of her sisters, or her cousins, or her aunts.
@Michael,
Ms. Bujold held a reading of her latest novel this evening at a local book store.
I knew about it, but I could not attend.
Michael… For Vorkosigan, seems the saying, ‘no good deed goes unpunished,’ really applies.
Thanks for the Carol backstory, looks like she’s cutting down on the smokes.
