Junk Food
This cartoon came out of my “discovering” the GMO food mess. I got angry when I became aware of the Monsanto business practices and how it has contributed to cancer, food allergies, and health problems in this country.
I had my own health experience revelation when I was in France. I was able to eat and drink many foods (and wine!) that would normally trigger migraines… but I did NOT experience any migraines! This perplexed me… and I wondered why… ?
After watching a TedTalk about a mom whose kid developed a food allergy (and how she found out about the Monsanto connection)… I began to put two and two together… I was being poisoned by the “food” I was eating! I quickly decided to go organic as best I could and drink French wine (as is possible), which is working quite well. So far, the headaches have been held at bay.
Please know, I am not lecturing. I am hopefully inspiring awareness.
I have known about the Monsanto issue for a very long time, so you’re preaching to the quire so to speak with me. That’s one of the reasons that my husband and I have been trying to get enough money together to purchase property and start our own organic goat farm. We want to use permaculture techniques to help give back to people the choice of healthy non GMO food at an affordable price. One of the biggest issues about organic food is the price, if we can get a small farm going where we are not employing a ton of people to hand pick insects off of the plants, we can keep the costs down enough to keep the produce affordable.
We know that we can do it, it’s just been tough for us trying to get the initial capital together (Capital or capitol, not sure if that’s the correct spelling, I often mix up sound alike words). But yeah, the reason most people don’t choose to eat better food is because sometimes the only thing they can afford is the stuff that’s actually toxic, and big agro and Monsanto like to keep it that way because that’s what makes them the big bucks.
Not to mention that Monsanto has been extensively linked to decline in honey bees. Round up is one of the major contributors to Colony Collapse Disorder.
We’re starting to have lots of Monsanto product here is France and I must admit I’m a bit worried. but we had lots and lots of food scandal here too (contamined cow meat, frozen lasagna with horse meat, false bio product, there was even a contaminated cuncumber scandal two year ago, I’m NOT making that one up. False alert in the end but well), it’s getting harder and harder to find food I can be sure it’s not at risk AND affordable. I did a bit of math recently and discovered my food bill nearly double in the last ten years, and I have been eating less and less recently. I have a friend who is a bit of a bio nut but she is a lot more wealthy than I am and don’t understand why I can’t afford organic eggs and meat every day, but really, 30 euros a week on groceries? Not for me.
And I’d like to add: You were very right about Back2school sales. Very very right and I’m sorry I even doubt you. This is my new personal hell.
I work at a health food store, and I can tell you that we get MANY people that come shop at our store because we have organic products in the entire store as well as most of our product being GMO free. Currently we are working to become GMO free and that is very exciting, especially for our community (being a small college town) and the day we go GMO free will be an awesome one!
Pasha… Yes, the Monsanto issue makes me wanna start growing my own food to a certain extent. Yesterday at the farmers market, I bought some lettuces an d spinach to grow in the yard. Problem is, seeds are now contaminated… Thank you Monsanto.
And about the bees… ! This makes me crazy! But it seems so obvious!
Val… Noooooo! France is my refuge! It is the land do safe food! Am I in dreamland thinking that France would be my respite? Where dangerous GMO foods don’t exist? Where I could move if this country’s food supply becomes a horror film? Oh, please fight Monsanto there! They’ve messed things up here… Let us be an example!
And you are right, organic (bio) is more expensive… But I am noticing that my grocery is offering more and more organic food options… The price will come down I think.
And I am sorry that back to school is a zoo there at your art store… I guess it is a universal experience in both countries… Hang in there… It will be over soon…. Just in time for Christmas!
Sarah… That is GREAT! As GMO gets more see thru, people will not want to be exposed to this. Judy and I were talking about how the FDA allowed this to happen because Monsanto has planted (forgive the pun) their executives & lawyers in congress… Many of the heads of the FDA have been in Monsanto’s camp for years. So congress is ripe ( sorry) with pro-Monsanto supporters. The congress is bought by Big food. Sigh.
So we as consumers have to talk with our wallets and our actions. We can do it!
I, too, am concerned about GMOs. Unfortunately, although I live in a largely rural county in South Dakota, organic food is not an option in my town. I don’t know whether to trust Monsanto, which provided grant money for a Kids Against Hunger packing project this Saturday (Sept. 14) in my town.
My local indie theater is going to show the documentary “GMO OMG” this week.(Catch the trailer here: http://www.gmofilm.com/trailer.aspx) One of those movies I really should watch, but it feels too much like homework…
Eh, to be fair, I think we have quite high standard concerning food.. Or at least, I have, my ma was a very good cook and had a dietetic formation every year at work (she was a child care assistant), so I had been raised with good products and good example. But mondialisation make Monsanto product available everywhere…
Though, if you understand a bit of french, i think this website will interest you. The author make recipe inspired by junk food, but actually healthier 🙂 http://www.lasupersuperette.com/
James…. I am sorry that your options are limited. That is unfortunate. I would encourage you to watch this very well done cartoon… it’s very well done and you can get a glimpse of what Monsanto is doing… http://tv.naturalnews.com/v.asp?v=e9b36b60ef3e646e65735f3e35d700c9
Brad…. that looks well worth watching! I will find that in a theater ’round here… I know it must be somewheres here soon!
Val… great link! My french is improving… I can read a lot of it! Yay!… and the pics are very good. Randie should definitely look into this sort of thing!
Globalization, as we call it, isn’t always good.
REALLY? You all are trying to perpetuate that anti GMO horseshit? Go away and take your unvaccinated anti-vaxxer plague children with you. Your superstition is genuinely idiotic. I will no longer be going through the archives nor viewing new issues of this comic. Kindly take your ignorance and drop dead along with the humans you are trying to kill with this unmitigated stupidity you are trying to spread. You are shit to foist this vile lie upon impressionable persons.
