Joe Vet
Happy Vets’ Day. I hope that you all will smile at and thank a vet today… I, myself, appreciate their dedication and service to our country. My dad was a vet… and I’d buy him a big ol’ cup of Maxwell House (his favorite) if he was still with us.
Anyhoo… You’ll notice, those of you who are old enough… the “I’d like to teach the world to sing…” song used by Coke in the 1970’s. I don’t know if the song did anything but help sell Coke, but the sentiment was good. The goodwill idea, I feel is long past … now it’s “I’d like to give high fructose syrup to the world …” … but that’s just cynical me.
As a vet myself I would hope people put their focus on future vets, as in making fewer of them and remind your representatives to quit sending our sons and daughters on fool’s errands. War is supposed to be serious and we’ve been using it as a toy. As a loyal patriot and a veteran, that angers me to no end.
The day I first saw a National Guard unit being activated and sent overseas was the day I really lost my cool. The Guard was meant for stateside service, not deployment. But I had better stop there before I really get going, heh.
Happy Veteran’s Day to my brothers and sisters in arms … to the rest of you, you’re welcome … it was an always shall be an honor.
And to our little brothers in the Marines … happy birthday, and no you can’t borrow the ship for the invasion but we’ll be happy to drive you there, again, and flatten the beach for you. That’s what brothers do. 😉 But you’re buying the beer this time.
The Hilltop Singers sang that song. I always loved it!
I always thank vets, regardless of the day. But yes, this day should be honored by thanking those who gave up their freedoms so we might have ours.
Anyone know why this day – November 11th – is Veteran’s Day? If you don’t, look it up and learn your interesting historical fact today.
G-Wolf… and Thank you. And I agree with you. AND… my Dad was a Marine… I’m sure he would’ve laughed at your comment at the end there.
Pete…. I loved that song, and (now) wish it wasn’t associated with Coke.
Nov. 11 isn’t just celebrated here… but all over. I raise my Decaf Almond milk latte.
Pete,
I have long been aware that the Armistice ending the actual fighting of the “War To End All Wars” (World War I to us today) went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month; however, I wonder how many additional casualties can be attributed to the politicians’ decision to pick a date and time that would be “easy to remember”.
Beetles,
It probably saved some lives. The Armistice was agreed upon at 5AM that same day. (November 11, 1918) Things were hurried along so that all combat could cease just over six hours later. The last soldier to die in WWI was an American, Henry Gunther, who was killed while charging German soldiers, only one minute before the cease fire went into effect.
Beetles & Pete… when I visited Nantes, France this past summer… there was a touching exhibition I went to on the World Wars and how they effected Nantes. At the end of WWI… Sadly, communications being what they were, the news of the end of the war didn’t get to some of the smaller communities in France. Therefore, fighting needlessly continued. How sad for those that died in that time.
I love Rudy. He is my favorite character. In this and several other post I saw yesterday, My first thought was vet = animal doctor. I am happy to buy animal vets a cup of joe too…and I am sure there is a joke in there waiting for you to do a strip about….
CTB… (hi ho!!!) ha ha… Yes, buy a Veterinarian a joe… they have a tough job, too. So I would extend that phrase… And if it’s Twinkie’s vet, you should buy her coffee all year long!
CTB + brig,
I recall a piece on TV several (many?) years ago with an army veterinarian describing the use of mules – he focused on the Monte Casino assault.
