Being in a funk during a job search feeds on itself. Mouse is already down because the Artbox closed and now he’s discouraged because he’s getting no replies to his resume. If he’s not careful, this will show in interviews and further discourage him when he doesn’t get the job.
Really, it’s not like he has a skill set such that people will come looking for him. You can find jobs online, but you have to send that resume out to them. Especially when they are already getting applications by the hundreds.
Yat & Mary… I was in that Funk once or twice. I hate the go out and get and apply application process. When I first moved to Orange County after high school, I loathed the idea of doing the rounds to find a job. But magic happened when my Mom got a notice at the newspaper she worked at, that Disneyland was hiring! The rest is history.
Pete… good advice. We got a Wii for Christmas. And although it’s a little different, we’ll “step on” and two hours will go by and it’s… “what? It’s bedtime?!?”
Jack… What is it about Six that is better than Nine? The dome shaped fishbowl helmets, I imagine.
Dada… old enough NOT to live in his mother’s basement. Randie and Ryan… um…
*** And I see I’ve made a mistake… it’s BackSTREET Comics… Not BACKSTAGE Comics. Sometimes we tooners need a Lexicon of our own work… speaking of which… Jude has been helping me with such a thing. On her recent winter break, she went through the archives (honestly… there are over a thousand comics from the start) and gathered histories of each of the characters. There are now files. I had done something like this at the beginning of the comic… and it fell away. Now things are clearer. Thanks Jude!
Ah Mouse, the fisherman. He’s dropped his resume into the waters and is now waiting for a bite. And in the meantime… Zombie Planet 9. Hey with the way folks are embracing smart phones and tablets (not me as of yet), I can really visualize a buncha fisher-folks playing Zombie Planet while waiting for the next fish to bite on the lure.
In yesterday’s discussion I mentioned a couple things that Grace may be doing to bide her time. Delivering (half-eaten) pizzas and demanding big tips, and apprenticing at a law firm, with her being a shark in either case.
I also dropped an apparently too subtle query about the return of Twinkie THE CAT. No cat follow up, but plenty about, erk, Twinkie snack cakes. To which…
Pete/brig… Tastykake of Phillie is such a great name for a company, spelling notwithstanding. I’m happy that there are bidders out there trying to bring Hostess along with it’s Twinkies back. I also heard that Walmart is in the fray to take over the baker. Regardless, it would be so cool to have Twinkies return, especially with different kinds of fillings. Yeh, they’ve had vanilla cream for a long time, but they originally had banana cream. I also understand that 3 Musketeers bars (chocolate cream filling) used to originally come in packs of three mini bars with three neapolitan ice cream inspired fillings (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry), which would be sweet to have return.
And, speaking of returning Twinkies…in less subtle terms…what of the cat?
Well, Walmart is not currently the high bidder, but the auction does have something like a month to go, and most large grocers have their own house brands.
I’m thinking about how Hostess went out of business because one of the unions representing their employees would not agree on terms and end a strike. Then I’m remembering how some years back a giant Walmart store in Canada became the first and only to successfully unionize. Walmart shut that store down in a heartbeat, explaining that it did not need a store in that location. Hmm, pretty strong union-joining message to their employees.
Well, lets root for a Tastykakes win.
Yeah, Twinkie (the cat, not the snack cake) to make a guest appearance.
Yeh, cats can be like that with varying space needs, me too for that matter.
Part of Hostess’ problems were with management… not with the union. They tried to blame it on the union… but in fact, management grossly misspent and mismanaged the company’s money. There were reports of “treats” given to upper management when the end was within sight.
Walmart is anti-union for sure. How else are you going to hire, underpay and then abuse your workers? Their track record isn’t very good… and now they have been found to be paying bribes in Mexico. Sigh… I won’t shop there. No, I won’t.
Yat, yeah trying to find a job when your skill set isn’t the greatest and you can’t afford to go back to school to brush up or learn something new is very depressing. I fell into that funk trap and it cycled for 7 years. I busted my hump for three years trying to find a job, for the next two years I struggled with depression while trying to find a job, for the last two I just went through the motions barely repressing rage before acknowledging that I had given up.
That’s what prompted me to start looking at alternatives to getting a real job, and why I now run an Etsy Shop selling hand made jewelry and eclectic items. I may not sell much in my shop yet, but at least I’m making some money on occasion and I don’t have to deal with interviewers who make you jump through hoops to maybe qualify for a job they already have a hundred other applicants for.
I found the last two years of my job hunting that it was harder and harder to put up with the stuff that interviewers do in order to rattle you to see how well you do under pressure. I kept getting angrier and angrier and simply gave up before it came to the point of me losing it on an interviewer and winding up in jail for assault. The way some of them treat you is really unacceptable.
They see you as just one out of a hundred or so warm bodies, and if you don’t have a great skill set and a barbie doll personality (i.e. plastic smile and fake enthusiasm) they have 99 more to choose from. Most don’t even seem to care anymore that you might be a person so desperate for a job because you are one step away from homeless that you would do or say almost anything to get a chance.
Gone seem to be the days that you applied to a company with the expectation of getting a job and being there through retirement age. Everyone is disposable and easily replaced by the next eager young applicant, and heavens forbid if you aren’t as young and eager or as skilled as the next person.
Even the employment agency treats you like that. The last time I went to an orientation meeting there the person lecturing us was talking about how to best present ourselves for employment and how to keep updating our resumes even after we found a job so that it would be easier to find our next job.
He got annoyed at me when I asked
“What if you find a company you like that you want to stay with?”
He said that it didn’t matter, that you should always be looking for the next better job because job security wasn’t real. When I asked him if his resume was updated he just glared at me and didn’t answer and move back into his speech about how to get a job.

Just don’t slip into the gaming rut, Mouse. It’s a comfy little hole in which to lose yourself and never be heard of for from again.
I like ‘Zombie Planet 6’ the best.

Living at home…ugh. How old is Mouse?
For that matter, how old are Randie and Rye Bread?

stick… GRR… If Wal-mart takes over, I shall not buy.
You will see Twinkie in week 4 of this month. I’ve given the cat some space. Cats need space sometimes… until they don’t. Cats are like that.
