Jazz Fest
It’s the weekend of The Monterey Jazz Festival here in my neck of the woods. I love me some jazz. I don’t love me some high ticket prices. In any case, Randie and Spill have the right idea… sit by the fence and scribble and listen.

You Go, Randie & Spill!
Jazz for the Peoples!
I remember standing outside a club to hear a band when I wasn’t 21 and the gig was at a bar. I waited out back until 2 am to maybe get an autograph. Alas, Mr. Ronnie James Dio came out for a little meet and greet on the sidewalk with about ten of us fans. Good times.
Jack…
Wow, Dio doing a performance at a bar! It must’a been loud. I’ve got a dvd of one of his concerts with what I recall was a giant mechanical dragon in the background. So, did you get your cd or cassette signed?
Ha. Love the added drawing of the jelly sandwich. When the hunger grows and the imagination fades… draw what you see. Also like the two artworks, only Spill’s is a bit washed out. Or, is that Randies?
Not washed out, stick, softer. Spill has a more brightly colored, bold-faced style, Randie’s is a little more pastel. Also, I doubt Brig drew a sandwich ‘because it was there.’ She put it there because it’s what Randie and Spill would be eating.
Oy.
Jazz Festival tip for starving artists – sign up to be a volunteer usher! A) You get into the venue for free, and B) if you can swing to be an usher in the same section each time eventually you get to know box seat holders and occasionally you get offered free tickets! (My parents taught me this trick.)
Okay… Clarification needed:
Sammich for eating.
The pastels there are actually Nupastels which are a little less chalky but still smudgy (and interesting tidbit: my friend Terry gave me a OLD set that belonged to his mom, so I stuck it in the comic today).
This part got more confused: Randie’s work is on the left, Spill’s on the right. Spill’s work is more doodle-y and uses lots of hearts and is more “stream of consciousness” type drawing. Randie used the Sharp-o Marker, so here’s is more bold here.
JC… great tip! Randie should look into that for next year!
Jack… Wow. I remember when I could stay up ALL NIGHT. Now I can hardly make it to midnight without a coffee or chocolate or some such stimulant.
stick… loud for sure! I still can’t hear out of my left ear that well… stupid Ratt/Poison concert.
brig… Thanks for the clarities.
I can see how the sandwich paper (maybe a napkin with a fold on one side) could have been used to keep the food off of the dirt. I thought that the pic on the right was more Spill’s style, only Spill, the comic version, has been known to use swirls, and, well, both pics have swirls.
Between the two, Spill’s is fun, but I like Randie’s bolder style better.
jude… Oy???
Yes, oy.
I think if I did this toon over, I’d make the blanket more defined (in the middle) and make Randie & Spill’s artwork more different from one another… and maybe add chalk to the fence there… inspiration spilling out off the paper.
