Opportunity is knocking. You can ignore it… or open the door…. you can open the door and say “no thanks,” or you can open the door, hug opportunity and invite it in for a drink.

Aw fudge, and just after he told Randie something like that wouldn’t happen for awhile =/ I honestly hope he doesn’t do it, of that maybe even Randie can somehow manage to come along too. She’d probably love it after she got over the awkwardness. x3
Mr. Dr. Ryan Shufflebottom?
Well, I didn’t see that coming. Hoooo boy.
Too bad, so sad, Ryan can’t go. It’s like how the main actors in a television series never get knocked off, because they’re the stars. Randie has to remain. Ryan has to remain. The strip is called Squid Row, not Savoy Road. Baa-Bye Em. Rye stays. He has to, it’s in his contract.
That’s rushing things just a bit, isn’t it?
…
I am suddenly reminded of the english girlfriend from Friends. Called Emily. Who comes between the main characters.
…
Deliberate? XD
How much time has passed sense they’ve met? Dose this comic go in real time? or is it slower or faster? Because this seems like rushing into things.
Comic logic is very confusing.
Wow.
I don’t know how this would turn out, for Randie, Ryan or the actual Squid Row comic, but my fatherly/writer advice would be: GO, Ryan! You have an opportunity to travel abroad and grow your literary skills and experiences. Randie will have some time to grow up, and the comic will have a chance to expand to a “Squid Row: England” for awhile, as Randie will have a chance to visit Em and Ryan a few time while their Over There.
A real challenge for Randie, Ryan and Brig. But a fun one, methinks!
stick-figurer,
McLean Stevenson.
My grandma always used to say that people should knock on opportunity’s door, rather than wait for her to knock first (she figured opportunity was a woman because of the term ‘Lady Luck’).
This isn’t really relevant, your blog post just reminded me of it, is all.
Small Dave, I like that 🙂
I sense an opportunity for Randi to see Paris….after all, once you’re in Europe visiting another country is like traveling between states in the US.
Beetles,
Wow, a M*A*S*H reference. Nice.
Yah, both Henry Blake became Sherman Potter and Trapper John became B.J. Hunnicutt in season 4. Due to contract disputes and grievances over playing in second fiddle supporting capacities to Alan Alda’s Hawkeye character according to wikipedia. Apparently Radar was itching to leave at the same time also but the producers wouldn’t let him until year 8. Oh, and don’t forget Frank Burns changing out for Charles Emerson Winchester III in season 6.
Point is, yes, supporting folks left but were replaced with very similar characters.
If Ryan does go, he’ll likely be replace with a “Bryan” of a nearly identical disposition.
PS: Who was the better Hawkeye? Alan Alda (tv) or Donald Sutherland (original movie)?
I say the latter.
Brig,
Good for you for having Em finish her doctorate. I’ve known folks in bachelors, masters and law programs that gave up just before finishing them. Sad.
Squiddies All… I have to admit that I have never had an easier storyline to write. I am about 3 weeks ahead, and the coming challenges for my main characters are challenging me as a writer. I am enjoying this wrinkle in Ryan & Randie’s lives. I won’t give anything away as I want it to be fun for it to unravel and unfurl on its own.
Pete… yes there is so much that will and can and might happen!
Beetle… I’d forgotten about that MASH incident. Killed his career… except for The Match Game (which I absolutely ‘blanked’!)
Dave… opportunity is a wonderful thing. I try to listen for it. Sometimes the knocking is faint… and sometimes it won’t stop banging on the door!
Dani… Cartoon time is a funny thing. You have For Better Or For Worse that followed real time watching the kids grow up. It presents limitations… which is why Johnson is goin’ back to spend more time with the characters… I have trouble with that… but it seems to be doin’ alright for her. I don’t like to put limitations like that on my strip… I want to advance time at my own pace… (Like Baby Blues… isn’t that baby like 10 years old by now?) So to answer… they bumped into each other in early November last year…
Lix… I was a Friends watcher for the first 5 seasons (after that, the show made me mad… it shoulda been called Friends with benefits.) Anyhoo… when I was putting together this comic strip (back in 2002), I used that show as sort of a model… all these friends who were struggling to get along (supposedly with a great NY apartment) and they all were JUST friends. “Emily” on the show and Em in the strip was not conscious or intentional on my part (maybe it was my brain subconsciously working) … but I like that there is sort of that connection. I like my Em better than Friends Emily….
Brig: Sorry if this is insulting, but Ryan’s expression in the final panel suddenly reminded me of the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots (though admittedly, Ryan’s head hasn’t just left his shoulders…) 🙂
