Infuriated
Randie is on the up and up… squatting would be unthinkable… when it comes down to it. She is legit. Thus the anger lines in panel 2.

And alas, she does not have a claim that would stand up in court. Even small claims court.
Nothing to be ashamed of! Squatting has a long and illustrious history!
No blame on Randie whatsoever, and I agree; she wasn’t squatting. But the eviction notice would have been hers if she’d stayed long enough. Unless whoever Durke was supposed to pay didn’t care or didn’t have a legal footing to charge rent to Durke in the first place. In which case… ouch… let’s not go there.
I bet you can fry an egg on Randie’s head right now.
I know a guy this happened to. He gave the money to his roommate and the roommate never paid the landlord. Said roommate turned out to be mentally il. My friend got slapped with a bill for $8,000 in back rent. Since he couldn’t pay it he was evicted and much of his personal property was taken as recompense for the unpaid rent.
I wonder how much Randie’s paintings would be worth in exchange for unpaid rent? I don’t suppose a landlord would be able to wait until her paintings become as valuable as Picasso’s are now. Can’t pay property taxes, maintenance, mortgages, repairs, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera (as the King of Siam might put it) with Randie’s paintings.
Mary… tis true… and sad. But SHE knows that she did the right thing…. and things COULD have ended badly.
Chug… things wound up okay for the artists at 59 Rue de Rivoli in Paris. They squatted for years, until the city let it be low-rent legit. Now they are studio galleries and open to the public… win-win.
Pete…. whether the entire thing was legal, considering the building is on a “teardown list”… is sort of a mystery. She lived there for quite some time after her house fire… so who knows?
Yat… and an omelet, quiche and any other egg dish you can think of.
Michael… That is a sad story. Eviction don’t look pretty on your rental record. 10 foot poles employed.
Yes, Picasso owed all kinds of money… the French Govt. made a little compromise… We now enjoy it through the Picasso Musee in Paris.
Trust is a nice thing, but a little paranoia helps keep you safe.
I owned an old mobile home in a pretty run-down park. The park’s owner offered me $6,000 for it, and I accepted. I got my money, but he never turned in the paperwork, and so I got charged for the property tax a year later. I’d made photocopies of his check and a letter he’d sent, and I showed those to the proper authorities. I didn’t have to pay the tax.
Oh I HATE this when you’re trying to be honest and it bring you trouble, but when others are being FRAUD and they got nothing >_< that's one of the reason I had to stop being freelance…
Rat… yes, when I have sold my former cars, I have often wondered… what horrors would occur should the paperwork on the other end not happen…? I mean, I sold all three of my vehicles to people I did not know. There is a lot of trust just put out there.
Val… and sadly, you are the recipient of trust and honesty being abused. I am sorry that the freelancing was more trouble than it is worth! Boo!
It didn’t help that in France, you can’t freelance in a.. well free way. You have to declare everything and you’re forbidden to sell prints and reproductions of your art. It’s original or nothing at all. Or else I have to create an activity as an editor and I can’t finance this -_-
