Cut down of coffee? Phffft!
Eating better is funny… if you are on a budget, it’s actually cheaper to eat “yucky” which is a shame. I guess it costs you more in the end with health problems.

As Jenny Eclair put it on the BBC show Just A Minute, while you’re tightening your belt, you’re also having to loosen it, because of the junky food you’re eating.
However, I defy anyone to say that Nutella sandwiches are yucky (especially if you toast ’em in a sandwich toaster and have ’em with either Coolwhip, whipped cream or ice cream). How else do you think I maintain my gorgeous, 191-pound figure? (Folks, I’m not so much beefcake as meatloaf)
Actually, eating healthy can be cheaper than eating unhealthy, but it means spending more time and energy on food prep, and eating more simply than most people are willing to. Beans and rice, which together give you complete proteins, are fairly inexpensive and last a long time, so you can buy in bulk. Eggs are another way to get inexpensive protein, as are peanuts. Raw fruits and veggies, in season, don’t cost much, either. For example, 2 pounds of carrots costs about $1.50, even in the dead of winter. It’s all in how much effort you’re willing to put into it.
Mmm. I love eggs. Unfortunately, I tend to have them in egg salad all the time… but that’s still better than the fried eggs I used to have every week, back when I was living in the UK…
But I’m not afraid of veggies – at least, not any more. A few years ago, I asked to have a pound of broccoli as my meal, and that was it. Mum was very accommodating, because by that time, I was an adult, so I had very clear ideas of what I did and didn’t like. Admittedly, the gravy I had with it brought down the healthiness by a significant degree, but I think that broccoli is one of my favourite veggie noms. (And now, I’m craving broccoli… and I don’t get paid until Friday!)
One of the greatest hurdles to eating healthy is not knowing how to best prepare complex menus, starting with knowing what’s good for you but also what’s good with what. Then, to top it off, everybody is always finding out the “bad” in every food and harping on negative qualities. It reaches a point where you just sigh and reach for a Bag O’ Chips. Yes, you know it’s bad for you, but at least you KNOW it’s bad for you.
I’m waiting for the medical study to come out that proves the healthiest thing you can do is starve to death.
Dani: Yer right… beans and rice go a loooong way …and are healthy. I lived on beans, rice, frozen corn and hot dogs thru my UC Slug days. Mind you, hot dogs are hardly healthy… but I opted for turkey dogs which, I argue, are better for you (if you don’t consider the nitrates).
I am a recent convert on Nutella (within the last few years)… the Nutella here in the states is inferior to that bought in Europe. The chemicals are different… no joke. But I’m with you, Knuckles.
Pete: you might have noticed that Randie is into SIMPLE. Therefore elaborate meals are out. Easy is a bag of chips… and it says right on the bag: Kills lab rats. (well, it might as well say that).
Pete reminded me of a position I used to cite frequently —
The Delivery Room should have a sign on its door reading “Being born is hazardous to your health!”
“Knuckles”… Brig, you make me sound like some sort of criminal! 😛
On the subject of turkey, I was surprised to find that although ground turkey is better, calorie-wise, than ground beef, turkey pepperoni has more calories than the regular sort.
And eight out of ten lab rats who expressed a preference went for Delay’s potato chips!
It’s funny the ways you pick up on food clues through life.
Using potato chips as a campfire starter made me think twice about chomping on them.
Yes, with all the oil they’re soaked in, they will light with a lighter, and are handy camping aids.
One time of many times helping friends move their stuff from place to place, we had za’s.
One pizza box held the pepperoni variety and was soaked clean through with grease.
Another pizza box that held a veggie pie hardly registered on the greasy-bottom-meter.
Well at least the first box soaked up some of the pepperoni grease we otherwise would have consumed.
Sorry, Astragali… you’re not a criminal. Really.
I love ground turkey… and Turkey Jerky… turkey pepperoni… more calories? weird.
Pizza grease, if excessive (which is kinda gross), needs the ol’ paper towel soak up. I guess there’s a reason pizza boxes are thick cardboard. Mmmm, pizza… with goat cheese and artichoke hearts. Trader Joe’s, I love you!
Here’s a great site about eating well on a tiny budget:

She regularly does a $25 shopping cart and stretches it to last a whole week!
Cut back on coffee…HA!
Good one.
